Coyote Hunting and Bug Dope

I use Repel with 29% deet from the wally world sporting goods dept. Green can. It has less odor and less offensive odor than the 40% deet found on the same shelf. I had a coyote circle and come in downwind of me this morning. She spotted me and stopped 50' from me but he did not know what i was as my camo was top of head to ground. I was watching her and i know she never smelled or recognized my smell. I use Tide free and a double rinse cycle. I also splash rubbing alcohol all over to kill bacteria and neutralize odors. Her last mistake was trying to cross the hay field instead of hitting the privet hedges she was skirting.

I know what you're dealing with! I've Been guest of honor at many black fly banquets. Here are some of the things that work;
1. don't go into the woods
2. use Avon skin so soft...smells good
3. smear creosote on yourself the old time loggers did this
4. use 100% DEET
5. hunt from inside an enclosed portable blind. The flies will get in but all they do is try to get out.
6. wait til fall

how about some type of dope or repellent, with plenty of cover sent?!? Wish we could really read there wicked smart predatory minds!

shannon bug tammer suits are awesome.i am glad to hear all you guys are having good luck with the Thermacell.they do NOT work around east tx.we have tons of the buzzen sob's around here.i bought another one and thought that 2 might get the job done didnt help at all.i have called the folks at Thermacell and taked to them about it and they didnt have much to say.wish they would get something figured out.

I"m new here but what I use during Sept bow and Oct MZ deer season that has worked well for me is products made by SAWYER one is the permethrin spray that you only use on your hunting clothes. NOTE follow the directions on the can !!! Then I follow up with the spray bottle of Maxi Deet that is 100% deet. After a few bouts of Chiggers from hell and a bout of lime disease I don't go a field unprotected. I"m pretty sure they are almost odorless as I've taken quite a few deer with this combination. Hope this helps.
O.D.

Use SAWYERS.. both the cream and the spray permetherine. The cream is odorless and is used by the military for use on your exposed skin; the spray is for your clothes, and will last several days.

Huh, SAWYER's sounds wicked. May have heard of them but hell I dont rember. I gess its time to jump on google, just like I did for the Thrumacell.

At one time you could buy directly from Sawyers, but I think there's a new regulation that keeps you from doing that now. There are several on-line "pharmacies" that sell it as well as several camping supply companies.

It is great stuff though; I've been using it about 5 years now. The cream great for gnats a mosquitoes; the spray works on ticks, fleas, and chiggers - a Southern delicacy!

ThermaCELL work as long as there is little or no wind. They are only effective to a radius of 15 ft around you. They need 15 minutes of operation in order to get rid of the bugs in the 15 ft diameter circle around you.

But if you have a ten mph wind it will blow all the heated insect repellent away and the ThermaCELL won't be effective.

Read the directions and it will tell you the very same thing.

But if you have a good breeze that will help control the flying insects. They can't fly too well in a stiff breeze.

Now crawling ticks and other bugs are another story. I would use DEET for them and tuck in the pants into the socks and tuck in shirt tail and spray all open areas and entry points with high concentrations of DEET.

ThermaCELL sells an adapter kit to use for cover scents. It slips over the spot where the insect repellent pads go and you can put a thick pad in the slip on metal holder. I plan on using some red fox urine on my pad and then put that over the top of my ThermaCELL insect repellent pad. I am hoping to be able to use both at the same time.

One could put in a number of liquid scents onto the thick pads that come with the ThermaCELL add-on device. They call it ThermaSCENT Scent Dispenser Platform & refill kit. These pads are about 1/4" thick and about 1/5" x 3.5" in size. They come with three of these white thick pads, the metal adapter and one plastic container of liquid butane gas.

Unless things have changed, a lot, it should not be too hard to locate in sporting goods stores or places like fleet farm.

That being said, I've heard an awful lot of good things about a thermacell, without trying one but from other hunters I would recommend trying that. (yes, I know I should have at least tried it, but I also know a lot of folks swaer by them, including some close friends who do a lot of bowhunting also)
