coyote hunting and dogs

I am a total newbie so dont boot me on my first day. I am looking to get into coyote huntting with dogs. I live and work on a ranch in id. The yotes around here dont come to calls or anything....to many guys from boise try. We lose a couple calves a year to yotes. So here what i need to know, what kinda dogs and how to train them? I have a hanging tree cow dog, and bought a guy a work with a htc [beeep] to breed him too. I was wondering about using some cats and maby some pit bulls or those dogos that i have seen? i would like a dog that can take them down and kill them...and a pit or dogo just to make sure it gets done....any advice?

If they wont come to a call and all you want is coyotes caught and killed, you have a few options. The most popular are lurchers or running hounds. Someone should come along to give pros and cons of each

I also assume, you mean running them down with dogs. Those hanging tree dogs have some grit, but maybe not the leg. I'd get a stag hound or a greyhound/dogo cross, if you really want to get experimental. One of my best catch dogs was a greyhound/pit cross. He wasn't as fast at the greyhounds, but man, he could flat crush a coyote!

I live nearby you. How many people have tried to call them? I'd sure love the opportunity to try while you figure out what kind of dog to get

Let me know.

alot of people.lol they trapped them to but when the bosses dog got caught in one we stopped that....although it was a heeler and no one complained to much....

sorry for so many posts. what i was thinking was use the cats as decoy type dogs. find em bring to me then send the pit in? will that work?

No. If you get them decoyed and send the pit they won't fight for long and the pit can't catch them. Your expectation are not realistic, it just doesn't work like that.

shootem! why send a pit out to finish I don't believe a decoy dog alone will bring in a coyote so they must be answering or coming to something? call, decoy, shoot repeat as nessary.

most coyotes will outrun most dogs. if you want to run them down you better get a running breed. just by letting a dog run out in a field doesnt mean a coyote will run up to it. but if you can lure one out with a dog you might as well shoot it. a 2 legged yote will outrun a pitbull.lol.

By means i am know expert, (yet) a couple of things i noticed in the OP.

1. Is it legal in your state to dispatch Coyotes solely with a dog? (Not shooting them 1st) I know it is illegal in Colorado.

2. 100,000's of thousands of Coyotes are killed by Hand/E calling each year alone, no need for a dog in some cases.

3. I just picked up a Puppy from DuaneSSU and he Bullet) is not only going to be a Decoy dog, he will also be our best friend, sounds like you are trying to breed a dog that will destroy Coyotes on sight? I have watched a lot of DDog(s) videos and that has not been the case so far.

Just my opinion and past observations on the OP.

i know a handfull of fellas from kansas thatdog hunt western kansas/eastern colorado and they slaughter them with the stags... like 30+ a weekend or until the dogs are spent

Heck, they caught and killed 56 in a weekend here with stags, just East of my house. Best we ever did was 11 in a weekend, back in Illinois.

Drew, your question about decoying coyotes in, then sending the dogo or pit....I'd say you are better of just shooting them. Bullets are cheaper than dogs. If you are more of a working ranch and not into the coyote calling, then just get a couple/three stags and work them with your cattle dogs. They'll light out on a coyote and take care of it, while you are working cattle.

30 a weekend? How many stags does this handful of fellas have?

We had a blue heeler once that would kill evey coyote he seen that would stand and fight. he actually jumped off of the truck several times while running 40 mph when he would see a coyote in a field as we drove by. on top of that he was one of the meanest dogs we have ever owned. not to us, but if anyone showed up he would try to eat them. needless to say, he didn't last long around my house..... it was cool to see him kill a coyote but his job was to work cattle. R.I.P.lol

Dang that heeler must have been a bad rascal.

My rancher buddy down the road has a dog like that. A heeler/boston terrier cross. It drags dead coyotes, bobcats, and rattlesnakes back to the yard. Mean as sin, soon bite you than to look at you. Been ran over 4 times, once with both axles of a full horse trailer. Baddest little dog I've met.
