Coyote hunting in Indiana

I'm headed back down to school Saturday at DePauw. Anyone around there want to do some yote hunting? I have yet to shoot one as my brother and I don't have a clue on what to do. If anyone wants a shooter to take along I would really appreciate it.

Being clueless? is not a good start. I suggest you read as much as you can on this site in the various forums. Specifically about coyote behavior, as to how they use wind, terrain & ground cover. I started a thread down in the Biology forum [wind, coyotes & Red Fox]. That any hunter young & old can benefit from.

I don't call much. But I have observed many coyotes over many yrs in their natural state. Having a basic understanding of them, is best from the get go. Beats, remaining clueless

Kirby, you must have a lot of answers especially with so many posts. The man is looking for someone to go hunting with in Indiana and learn on the job. Can you help?

Yup I read his post & understood what he wanted. I also offered him up some free education about coyotes. So "eventually" he & his Brother could hunt them together "on their own".

Well, now 204Gunner other than you self-annointing yourself as a forum sheriff[to straighten me out?]. It doesn't appear the OP recieved any other help? now does it.

Yet you felt the need to rip on me. You also never offered the OP any help. Classic.

Next time either offer the OP help or not. Do not try your hand at forum sheriff duties with me. As I don't give a rats rump what you think.

I've read a fair amount on here and sections here and there in the coyote hunter's bible that there was a link on here to download. We deer hunt and understand wind, sitting still, and camouflage. We have gone out for the past two years and not been able to call one in. I have hand calls and my brother got a foxpro this past Christmas. He shot his first yote by a stroke of luck looking out the living room window as one was meandering in the field.

rugerider I've hunted coyotes since 1968, here in central Iowa rolling farmland. Roughly 90% of the time any given day they are in cover, adjacent to cover or in transit towards cover. As ground cover is an excellent wind brake.

The other 10% of the time any given day a hunter will find them out in the open areas. Specifically, areas that have terrain features that assist in blocking the wind.

Coyotes prefer down-wind areas. Whether they are on the move hunting/traveling. Or when they decide to bed down, mill around, ect.

Avoid exposing yourself to any down-wind area. When walking to your call stand. As that is where they most often are or soon will be. Otherwise they are in transit form one down-wind area to the next.

A new hunter doesn't need a "guide" IMO. What they need, is to understand the basics of the coyote & to have persistance.
