Coyote hunting in Iowa......Need some help......

night vision and thermal sights are allowed in iowa when night hunting. Considering you cannot use any sort or light or IR NV should work well when there is snow on the ground and thermal when there is not.

When I lived in Ames my buddy and I would drive the roads after a good snow and spot red fox. They curl up out in the open and sleep in the day time. Something to do in the dead of winter. We watched two do the deed and go to sleep. We snuck up on them and ended the family. We never tried calling but I think that mouse squeaks would be good and for coyotes a fox cry. I still have a call that I bought from Herters that I called my first coyote in AZ. Down by the river try a coon squall. I almost froze my ears off hunting in January. Mucho Frio.

Hello all,
I have spent quite some time since January hunting coyotes in the Des Moines river valley area north/west of Saylorville Reservoir. To this point I have been skunked. I have seen plenty of sign in lots of areas but no dogs.

Others have noted that with the terrain around here it is tough to get in without being noticed. I have been calling and just sitting. Seems like a lot of deer hunters like to dump carcasses in these public areas. Not sure if they are intending on using these as bait for coyotes or just using them to dump. I have been monitoring several carcasses and see plenty of sign. Still no luck.

I realize this is a tough time of year for hunting dogs. Wonder if I am messing this up or just the way it is.
