Coyote hunting with a retriever

Kooter

Posted this on the Predator forum but it looks like this is the place to ask. I have a Chesapeake bay retriever that is a great duck dog. Would bringing him along help or hurt the coyote hunting and how would I use him. Should I let him wander around the set up or would I have him sit beside me and watch like in a duck blind. He is a well trained duck and goose hauler with great obedience. I would hate to see what a 95 lb swamp bear could do to a 35 lb coyote. If any of you have been around Chessies thay are not a dog that is easily intimidated. Much more agressive and protective than a Lab. He has no problem with other dogs but is mostly around other well manered duck dogs, dont know what kind of reaction a coyote would spark in him? Any help or sugestions would be apreciated.

Kooter I too have a big male chesapeake 'Red'. I have taken him coyote hunting many times. I give him a hand signal to go out and then motion him to lay. I have never had any coyotes to come in with him but I once shot a coyote coming home from goose hunting. After the shot the coyote ran into some cattails. I let Red out of the kennel and he went in and flushed the coyote. The coyote ran out across a field with Red right behind. Now the coyote is wounded and about to die but Red grabbed him and wooled him pretty good. He really liked that. I have sicked him on dead coyotes in my garage and he will fling them around pretty good. Love those Chesapeakes! Mine is a real Chesapeake. He fights, bites, protects and is a real sweety pooh. He will be bringing in some geese in the morning. Randy

Well,
I can add this. We have a group of guys up here every saturday that gets together to run fox/yotes. We drive them like deer and use dogs, any type of dogs that will listen and not chase deer. Most have Labs of Goldens. They work just fine, fox hate dogs and take off from them very easily. Yotes on the other hand dont quite have the scaredness of them but if chased will run. Many times a fox will bust out and its only natural for the labs or goldens to give chase, they dont really know what they are supposed to be doing I suppose but we make them work. They have tackled and grabbed many a wounded yote and fox and gave it a good shake up.

My lab doesnt know she is out yote/fox hunting, she just is in the woods having a good time running a nice pattern in front of me. But.... But I took her pheasant hunting the otehr day and she ran every stinking yote track she could find till I called her off, ran right over the top of a bird once...goofy girl /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have two male Labs that I have to pen up before I go calling. Otherwise they will run a coyote till they tire him out. Then they will keep him pinned down until I catch up, and shoot him. They take all of the fun out of calling, and make me walk way too much. I just use a motion decoy, and leave the boys at home. One thing for sure is when I shoot a coyote that runs off(which isn't very often), and hides I can get the boys, and they will find it, even the next day if it's too late to take them back that same day. Those labs do have a nose on them. The only problem I have with them is they think if I hunt it, it's their job to chase it, and retrieve it. Whether it's ducks, geese, deer, turkey, or predators. Again thats why they get penned up during certain seasons.
