COYOTE SCAT

I was recently in the Tuscon, AZ area near Benson doing some dog hunting and noticed what looked to be coyote scat with agave seeds in it instead of fur. Is this normal or are they starving down there.

I'm not from AZ but I know that coyote scat content can vary considerably throughout the year. As different food sources become available, the coyote will utilize them till exhausted, then move on to the next easy meal.

For example, in my area, in the summer a lot of scat around here consists mostly of grasshoppers.

Little later the scat is mostly peach pits, blackberry seeds, apple seeds, water melon, cantaloupe and whatever other ripe fruit is available.

Fall comes and deer season starts, most of the scat will start turning to the usual black, tarry, hair filled stool we all know and love. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Anyway, point being, the content of the scat changes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Destroyer,

We didn't see hardly a living thing in the Benson area but on the drive home about 15 miles east of Benson just south of Pantano we saw four dead yotes on I 10. Go figure! I guess they'd rather commit suicide by car than by call. I did notice that the terrain changed from grassy hills to desert scrub with alot of washes in that area and that's where we usually find our furry little friends up here in Phoenix.

Was it kind of a "mustard yellow" color ?

The Mesquite beans are in pods off the tree but stay edible (coyote wise) for most of the year. A lot of the critter-poo will have it.

(If I go out tomorrow, Ill take a picture of some and try to post it)

Out here in Eastern Colorado you see pinion berries in the coyote dung...just looks like a little pyramid. Guess if they're hungry they eat about anything....

Here in Missouri the Show Me coyotes will have lots of seeds, grasshoppers, fruits, and berries in their stool during the summer and early fall. Along with the occasional rabbit, deer fawn, turkey poult, small bird, or mouse remains. Later in winter, just as someone mentioned above, mostly dark, hairy, scat filled with small bones. That's a meat filled diet and the best calling time, IMHO.

Coyotes are one of those animals that can, and will, eat just about anything. That is just one of the things that makes them the survivors they are. “Adaptable” is the word! Around here the scat contains a lot of manzanita berries in the summer and fall. They won’t pass up apples either, in addition to the usual meat diet which isn’t limited to wild game. I’ve seen coyote scat on sheep ranches that was white, and it wasn’t bleached out either. Almost solid wool.

Not meaning to be a smart alec, but has anybody else notice the beer cans ripped open and licked clean? Kind of leaves me with the impression they would be total sot's if they could.

Checked on some persimon trees this morning myself. Not a single one left on the ground now in that area.Enough coyte tracks in the area there to make you believe you' dhit the jackpot!Jimmie
