I was walking in the woods the other day, saw something interesting - found a dead deer, dead quite some time, it was just bones. the deer's hide was wrapped a few times around a small tree nearby like there was a tug-of-war fight over it. Could this be coyotes?

CLIFF when you get time let me know and we can go over to butner and show you what we have found over here , and possible get a hunt in.

Coyote prints and sign are easy to find. Coyote scat is similar to your dogs, but has alot of deer hair, rabbit and mouse hair in it. For some reason coyotes like to poop on large rock on our powerlines here. Maybe the same for you.

Prints are narrower than a dog also, and after some practice, quite easy to spot.

Run a search on prints and scat, you will have lots to read.

This is the easiest way to tell if a coyote has traveled through your area. A quick recon of your area will give you a positive I.D.

Could have been a bait pile. The hide was wrapped around the tree to keep them from dragging it off. Just a thought.

i have found that coyotes love chewing on hides, be it pig, cow, or deer. they drag it around and chew the hell out of them. i have shot two on different days chewing on a beef hide last winter.
