through the years of studying, it's known that yotes in the southwest are a bit smaller. getting larger as they go more north. cold climates and good surroundings for them to thrive in help as well. 2 yrs ago i shot a 50lb. alpha that came to another male challange call. 3wks ago i started a female/male communication to listen to response and observe initially, within a couple min. move to a rabbit distress. "the whole stand took maybe 7min." and in came another big male.48lb's. as soon as i figure out how to use a computer ill upload the pics. i was just curious the range in sizes elsewhere. by the way these 2 are the largest ive come accross but many others not far off.

Here in S. Missouri the males will average about 34 lb. and the females will average 28. I weigh each coyote I take and have kept a log of them over the last 5 years. My largest male in Mo. was 38. also shot a 37 from the same farm. Have taken several 34-36 pound males. The largest female was one I took about 2 weeks ago that was long and lean and weighed 31.5 lbs. In good shape she would have weighed 34-35. My largest coyote ever was a large and very near toothless male taken in the Texas panhandle that weighed 49 lbs. He was a whopper.

there are "hybrids" (coyote-red wolf) running around here in the North East that go over 60 lbs.

i posted this pic before. a trapper from Maine posted it on another site. it weighed 62 lbs.

I swear that looks just like a coyote I saw while hunting back in Virginia this past November. My huntin buddy and I were in a ground blind when a huge coyote walks 30 yards in front of the blind. I looked at it through the binos and I could swear I was looking at a wolf. I know there are no wolves in those parts, but wow was it big. If it wasn't for us hunting deer that coyote would be dead.

I've never weighed a coyote before, but I will start out of curiousity. I'm guessing the ones I've killed in the past here in Arkansas to weigh 30lbs or less. Mostly less, I do weigh every whitetail and Know 95% of people over estimate deer weights.----Let me tell you a story my Dad told me and it was true as he witnessed it.---In the early 1970s people came from 50-75miles to deer hunt around here. A group of guys from Little Rock killed a "big" coyote, and the discussion of weight started. They decided he had to weigh 50lbs. A friend of my Dads who was a houndsman and foxhunter looked at the yote and told them "it won't weigh 35lbs". Arguments started and they decided to weigh it on good scales, so off to the local store they went. Upon arrival at the store Elmo stated "I think I am wrong about the weight, it won't weigh 30lbs. Into the store and on the scales it went. My dad told me when he looked at the scales it weighed 27lbs, and admitted it was a big coyote. I guess around here they look big from being fuzzy.

Here is a big one, I aint's kilt him yet. His time draweth near LOL!

Males run around 35 or so, females a tad lighter. Killed a 47 lb female back in the early 70's.

They just finished the Mosquito Creek Hunt here in Pa. and the first place winner was 50.95 lbs. The second place one was 49 lbs and third was 48 lbs. BTW the first place winner got $7,000.00 and some change. Not too bad. The guys hunting with dogs are dominating the kills [beeep].

I'd would like to have seen that one! He'd look like a horse coming in!

Largest one I've weighed was 43 lbs. I've killed a few I thought were bigger, but wasn't near any scales.

All of my hunting has been done in the within 100 miles of the Canadian border (Idaho Panhandle). Taken 9 thus far this season with the first being the largest at 46 lbs. (Alpha male). Smallest was a 32 lb. female taken just this past week. All appeared to be in good physical condition with excellent coats.

I don't know what the local overall averages for SW Virginia is. I have taken several in forty pound group two years ago. They are distinctly larger after the release of the Red Wolves a decade ago.

The ones I've seen up north in oregon and some around wyoming have all been much bigger then what we have around here In los angeles. The one in my avatar was up in oregon it was pretty big. maybe 40 or 50 lbs. I'm 6'1" and if I held it by the back leg with its foot touching my chin then its nose barely touched the ground. I saw a few dogs of this size in the area crossing the road at night and roadkill. The dogs around Los Angeles are usualy only about 30 pounds.

I shot one of the biggest males I ever took last weekend, he weighed 42 pounds. Shot a female with him who went nearer 30. I would say average for a male here is low to mid 30's, with females slightly smaller.

40 lb coyotes here in Central Washington are far and few between. Have seen a couple this year that would have tipped the scales over 40# but didn't get the shots. Largest so far this year was at 39 lbs and smallest was 14 lbs out of 67 coyotes. The average coyote here is in the 19 to 25 lb range. Of course this time of year usually the larger males are responding and have shot about 8 or 10 in the 30# range. I wouldn't know what to do if a 50# coyote came in, probably scream like a little girl and run.

It would be nice if the PM staff or somebody here could create and post a spreadsheet or some means that we could record statistical data on the weight of our kills in certain areas of the country...maybe keep it honest by requiring a photo with the animal on scale or the likes... would be very interesting over time I think.

I'm guessing 35lbs is a pretty good size typical male for my county of North Central Kentucky.
