I dont like the idea of dog running to force em out in broad day light, hop out the truck and shoot em. just seems like it would take the beauty out of it. however yes it pains me to say ive also heard of guys who run dogs on em getting some 30-45 in a season. do others frowm on this with me?!

The coyotes I shot before I got a scale were much bigger

But since I have started weighing them they don't grow quite as big. Now a mature male around here is 28-32Lbs. Females seem to run about 20-25#. Young uns 15-20#. Largest I have weighed has been 36#.

Ain't that the truth! Pictures and proof of kill should be mandatory before kills and weight claims are stated! I'll have a real hard time with anybody claiming a 50lb yote in Kentucky or lower Indiana. Prove it! Weigh it! Post a Pic!

I can imagine that diet would play a very important role as to how big these dogs can get, as well as genetics. The dogs are kind like people, got big ones and little ones.

I was out for a walk this morning and found some dog scat at different places in my journey. I noticed the make up was mostly deer hair with a few small rodent bones, I opened up a few samples and they were all pretty much the same, mostly deer hair. One turd had a long red string embedded it, must have been something this dog ate.

My wife says this turd checking is disgusting, I reply it's a fine science well worthy of my time and attention.

Tell her it's not disgusting until you start sniffing and taste-testing them!

P.S. I read somewhere that coyotes might eat their own turds so as to re-digest any missed nutrients the first time around???!

Largest I have killed and weighed was just a touch under 49lbs (think 48 12). Going from that I would say the average adult male weighs in the mid 30's with females being in the low 30's.

Of course thats just a guess, but I don't think its all that far off. I don't make a habit of weighing average size coyotes, but going from the heavy ones I have weighed I think I'm guessing pretty close on the average ones.

To each there own. I'm not about to frown on another person and how they choose to hunt. I do think more people are using decoy dogs then running dogs though. And they can definitely help the number of coyotes you retrieve.

The biggest I've taken was a 45 pound male, pictured in my avatar. Seems most males here are running about 37 pounds. The average females I've been taking are running around 30. I took a really large male last week, but had no scales with me. He was likely right at 40 give or take a pound. Wore me out dragging his carcass out of the cornfield.

in 2008, I killed a 45# coyote, male between Houton and San Antonio. It was weighed on certified scales an came in second to a 46# in the county wide contest

I have been weighing all of our kills for the past couple of seasons. Most of our coyotes are around the 25lb range. We got one 37lb and one 34lb male on the same day. Alot of the females are right around 20lbs. We have yet to get one over 40lbs.

pwsamiam... thats a great idea~! can you contact the staff through email on that? it'd help all of us as a community of yote hunters track numbers in different regions. It would also be great for us as individuals being able to just track our own stats as well. "averages", "maybe the potency of each call", how they seem to be moving at which time of year where youre at etc... Great idea "Your idea 3 posts back on this same topic"

PWSAIM it sounds like your doubting yotes north of indy-michigan being 45-50lbs. I promise as soon as i get the digital card from dads camera on the 50 or figure out how to post this 48lb'r from my computer to this sight ill show ya. To hold you over though you can look at the "herald times bloomington indiana" on feb 9 the had an article that down in owen county >spencer' they had a yote hunting competition for jan. and the winner pulled in 21 yotes with the biggest being just over 48lbs! and thats down in Southern indiana. Now ask anyone who hunts em up here where its flat and agriculture, thickets and patch woods everywher."theyre bigger up here even". hope that satisfies you in the meanwhile but even if its hard for you to believe there are some big dogs from kokomo up to mich. and even in s. indiana their must be a few large ones down there as well. come up from c. kentucky sometime and i'll take ya out, let you leave with a mount.
