Coyote sizes

I'm posting a couple of older pics I had laying around. I think it's interesting that all of the foxes in the pics are regular sized, adult foxes. Each coyote is also an adult. The one laying on the snow is a 28lb female. The one with the two ugly guys in the pic is a 45lb male. Quite a difference!

Randy, I have to agree about the sizes of different coyotes. In this pic is a good example. The coyote on the left was a short stocky adult dog with very long hair. I have regretted not skinning him. The tripod dog on the right was an old male that still had some pretty good weight to him. They other two in the middle were average 30+ lb dogs. Its the short stocky one that has always stuck in my mind. I was about to shoot a whopper 10pt when he showed up. The deer could have cared less about my calling.
Big decision,,,yote or deer.

I'm just getting into coyote hunting here in Newfoundland (eastern Canada), but apparently our yotes can get pretty big indeed, some topping 50+ lb. They are big enough to be making a negative impact on our caribou population. Government conservation officers have observed single coyotes taking down adult caribou. Yikes. Hope to cull the population this year. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Interesting topic.

Many moons ago[over 35yrs ago]. We weighed one of our largest male Red. A tad over 15lbs. [16 or 17lbs, can't recall exactly]. Most Red's were in the 12-13lb bracket.

Coyotes, in my area. Mostly run in the upper 30's-mid 40's. The last 3yrs. Seen alot of mid 40's. A few pushing 50.

I have seen a wide spectrum of yotes down here. I shot a male recenty that I hope to send a pic of that im sure was topping out at around 35-40 lbs. And then cought a small lanky coyote some years back with some greyhounds that probably barely reached twenty. Furs are decent down here during the fall but in no way as you all know as good as the northen states. No matter the size, if coyotes have been exposed to house dogs they will sometimes come looking for a fight with the hounds, which is usually the death of them, unless you run a small pack 2-3 dogs, or a hound gets separated. I was shocked to hear of a littermate to an BIG hound that I own. Got separated from the pack and was found dead. My first thought," REVENGE BY .223!"

Here is the biggest coyote that I have taken to date. The two smaller ones in the picture are average 30+lbs.The Large one in the foreground went over 45+ lbs.

Hey PG, you finally get out and about or,,,,,the missus let you out to play a little. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Got my new Benelli last Saturday, ready for some night action now. Sad to spend so much money for a yote buster.

Is there more to this topic then the coyotes age and sex? In my area, age and sex have everything to do with the coyotes size and there is no mystery. Older males are the largest and young females the smallest. The only exception is a sick or very old coyote that is starving and there are very few of them around here! Here are a few comparison pics.

MBARONE,

If I recall correctly. It's in the Red Fox's [recessive-Gene-pool] heritage. As in color phases. Other species of fox have intermated with the Red's, many moons ago.

Pretty rare in my parts. Only seen 2 since, 1964. They were both running together, [from our hounds /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif]. One was dusky Black, the other Calico.

Not a very scientific explanation, huh /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

MBARONE,

Ya might want to GOOGLE-search that topic some. As I might not be too accurate on that subject /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

I have read that the coyote has not existed as its own species long enough to become genetically stable, this is why we see such a variety of sizes and colors. The grey fox by comparison is extremely stable no color or size variation. Have you ever noticed that some coyotes have pointier faces than others?
