I also am a huge fan of knives of Alaska.... I use the cub bear and the muskrat skinner for 99 percent of my work... but when I have a lot of beaver to do I usually end up using the replaceable blade knives.
Mike,
I have the same knife as you. Or I should say I used to have it. When it came time to start after the coyotes this year I couldn't find it. I inherited it forom my Dad when he died twenty years ago. It was 2-bladed trapper model and I loved it and it kept a good edge. I liked the steel and it was easy to sharpen. I would like to get another one. However, right now I am using a Camillus 2-bladed folder which is a little bigger than the one we are talking about. It has a skinning blade and a clip blade. I like the steel on the Camillus also. I like carbon steel blades as compared to stainless blades. Have always like Schrade. Look at the replaceable blade folder that uses scalpel blades that allpredatorcalls is selling. FWIIW I have never like Buck knives and you couldn't give me one.
By the way, was out east of you last week and shot the biggest Montana coyote of my life. 40lbs, but it looked twice as big as anything else I shot. His paws were huge.
About any of the smaller Bob Dozier knives are excellent. I particularily like the Canoe Knife and the Semi-Skinner. Here's my little Semi-Skinner in yellow Micarta and Dozier's legendary D2...
Thanks for all of the ideas guys. I have never been a knife afcionado. There are a lot of really nice knifes on the market. Keep them coming, I'm learning lots. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
Any small bladed knife with D2 steel, like that gorgeous Dozier knife,is tough to beat, but I would be happy with your trapping kinfe any day. I would rather use a broken beer bottle to skin with than a buck, I detest them, could never put an edge on any of them Ive used.
I like Dave McCrosky's knives. He has a trapper set that I believe is $135 including the sheath. He will resharpen for free for life.
I have 4 of his knives. The first set that I bought was a trapper set. I skinned and butchered 4 deer and the knife would still shave you.
I have a drawer full of this and that knives that cost around $35-$75 each that aren't worth a crap. I have some German knives that are a little bit better, but not by much.
Dave McCrosky's knives are not only beautiful, they keep an edge. I talked to one trapper that skinned over 100 beaver with one of his knives before he had to sharpen it.
Dave is a very special person, and a conversation with him will make you feel blessed! His phone # is 1-877-256-4837
