i snare in ky, and up to now, we had to use "relaxing" locks on our snares, so i`ve always used 3/32" 7x7 cable. just got word that next season we can use non-relaxing locks,(new verbage reads ('any one piece lock').i`ve never used 1/16" cable because of chew outs. now that we can use killer locks, i`d like to try 1/16". i`ve been snaring for 20 plus years. can anybody give me any ideas on thier setups, prefered locks, cable type & length of snares, etc... any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Why change? 3/32 is cheep and adds a bit of insurance. I do all my snares with the same size to cut down on random stuff to buy, except for my bear snares that is. 1 bulk roll is cheeper than several smaller ones in differnt sizes.

I use 3/32 for yotes the 1/16 is to small for a big dog even with locking style locks. I like building my own with a bent washer and two holes drilled in it. I tryed the factory style that had a different lock and they did not slide worth a chit. Even tuning the factory snares they still had to bear down pretty good to get it to fall. The washer style soon as they start in its a sealled deal. I have had some big yotes really work 3/32 over good before chokeing down. Just my opion stick with 3/32. And some good locks.

I have been experimenting with 1/16 this season. I am using sure-locks on loaded snare cable. This set-up seems to be doing really good. We have only caught a few animals in the set-up I'm using, but the bobcat and coyote seemed to be good quick kills. I have had people say they might chew or twist out of these, so I use a swivel end on them and make them 60" long. I think the trick is to set them in a spot that you can set up for a good neck catch. If I were going to use them where I thought I might get some chewing, I would shorten my snare and attach it to a 3/32 extension cable, but I think the 1/16 cable really digs in, and the wieght of the sure-locks really makes them fast sliding down the cable. Like I said before, We have only caught a few animals in this set-up, but so far, so good. If I have any problems what-so-ever, I will go up in cable size.

ky yote, i use 1/16 on most of my snares. i use 7x7 that is 4ft long for fence line snares and 1x19 thats 10 ft for trail snares, both with slim locks or cam locks and i have real good luck with them, the 10 ft gives them enough to tangle up most of the time. i havent had to many chew outs and i run quite afew snares. the 1x19 with the slim lock is a very fast snare if you load it

I use 1/16 1x19 cable for all my snares for coyotes and filed camlocks with 50 lb. dispatch springs 10 ft. long and have not had any chew outs but all coyotes were caught around the neck and dead. You can really load the 1x19 cable and they close super fast.

hey guys, I really appreciate all the input! I do some ADC work here for coyotes and the occasional otter, so I`ll probably try some or all of these setups before trapping season this fall, so I`ll keep you posted w/feedback and pics. Anyone who can give me new input or opinion, please feel free. Thank you all for your ideas!
Curt
