Coyote stomach acids

What they don't tell ya at trapping class or talked much about.
I'm a yr. new to trapping and in the fur handling.
I trapped my first coyote last season and held
onto the hide for this years market.I stored it
raw and properly, what I didn't know was until I
saw one of my friends at the gun shop who's a
trapper as well and he said to junk it cause
the coyote's stomach acid eats the pelt away.
I am sooo dissapointed with this news.
Why doesn't this knda stuff get mentioned outloud?
It was a beautiful hide and now it's junk.

If you skinned the coyote pretty quickly after you shot it and then froze the hide, it should still be ok. I have only had trouble when I left them for a day or two before skinning and the skin turns green around the stomach area. I have never stored one for a year though, just a couple months.

It may not be bad if you skinned it and salt dried it or properly fleshed it and put it up on a stretcher.
The stomach acid can't do a whole lot to the hide, laying in a ditch a quarter mile away. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

the stomach is full of acid and bacteria and on the wild k-9s is very strong. after any of the K-9s are shot and dye the bacteria is very much alive. this bacteria is very hungry and always looking for something to eat. and will start to eat the stomach. when this is happening the action is causing or creating heat and that can and will at some point cause slippage. thats why the belly is green unless skinned right away. also if you ever notice it will take a k-9 longer to freeze in the round then some of the other same sized critters

Will the same happen with a bobcat if stored in a freezer for several months? I mean will it ruin the hide for mounting purposes?

Thank you folks ! I didn't do anything but skin it right away, and then rolled it up tight in
a ball head first and then double palstic bagged it. So if it's no good around the stomach area can the rest of it still be used for something?
I hate to waste it if it's just gonna be around the stomach area that maybe spoiled. It was a
55#'r so the hide was very long about 6ft or so.

Stretch it and dry it and send it to a professional tannery and I bet the whole thing will be fine since you skinned it right after you shot it. If any of the stomach fur slips, you can use the good parts that you want. I bet it will all be fine though.

I don't foresee any problems Coyote wild but NY is a long way for me to see anything. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I wish you wouldn't have rolled it into a...
"tight ball"
...but Ive heard of worse. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

River
did I hear some one say rolled it up and threw it in the freezer /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif .
let me tell you a story of long ago.
It was a cold and miserable night, the coyotes were comimg to the call but I missed every one that I took aim and pulled the trigger on  . now I know some will say this is normal for me but it isn't. then out of the corner of my eye i say this ghostly figure and it scare me to death. was it the devil i don't know but a did strike up a deal and sell my sole to them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif . I will now hit all critters aimed upon and never miss /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif . however for everytime I read or hear about a hide that was rolled up and thrown in the freezer I will miss one critter. it sounded like a good deal and i shot a lot of critters that night. but now i never hit them any more, just to many people saying "I rolled it up and threw it in the freezer" ( I wonder if every time i say it or type it if it counts against me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif ). so it is my mission to inform as many as possible to fold your hides and throw them in the freezer.
reasons for not rolling them
#1 it takes to long to freeze the inner layers as they are insulated with a few layers of fur.NOT GOOD
#2 it takes to long for the inner to thaw after removing from the deep freeze. the outer layer will be at room temp and bacteria can start to do it damage on the out side while we wait for the inner to thaw. NOT GOOD
please help me find my mark and make my shots count /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I thank you but the coyotes won't /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Thank you guys for making me feel alittle better
about the hide.
I'd like to get this hide sent out to have fleshed
stretched & tanned. I don't really trust myself
yet on doing this handling yet {atleast not comfortable} to do this kinda thing yet.
I noticed one of you has a tannery what would you
charge to do this for me? I'd be willing to send
it out to you, I just want it for a wall hanger.
