Coyotes and railroad tracks

What’s everyone’s experience around railroad tracks? I have a few spots where there are good fields and woods but my permission requires them to cross tracks. If there’s no trains involved, will they cross? I see guys talking about them not crossing gravel roads but I haven’t experienced that yet. Thanks

Will a coyote cross the road/tracks? yes, if they think something is tasty on the other side.

Sit on the edge of the tracks if it's elevated! I've shot lots that way.....

I have a property that has a single railroad track running through it. Always find coyote tracks crossing them at a right of way road between 2 fields. I have not had success calling them in at this property yet, but admittedly don't call it often as I do not have many properties out that way and it's a haul to get there. Working on upping land access out that way to make the trip worthwhile. That said, coyote tracks crossing railroad tracks is proof positive that they will cross them.

There are laws here that prohibit hunting from the RR tracks and right of ways. I assume it is the same elsewhere. Check your laws before setting up on RR Tracks. I doubt a coyote is worth the fines you may receive.

I have sat on/by many a track and shot coyotes fox and cats. Coyotes will walk down the tracks if its convenient for them. They will definetly cross them.

I have lots of places where coyotes regularly cross tracks. Our state it is private property but according to the game warden you can cross them to access hunting grounds, we can have many miles between crossings.

Same here Erich. You can cross them just about anywhere you want. It's just illegal to hunt/shoot from the tracks or within right of way on either side of the tracks.

Absolutely—they will. Many railroad rights-of-way are overgrown and provide cover, windbreaks, and excellent hunting grounds for small game. That makes them ideal areas to target coyotes, which are drawn to those conditions.

There are 3 tracks in my County (installed to haul only coal) but tons of back roads--ALL critters cross them as if they aren't there. Main roads and interstate 79 are not an obstacle/barrier either.
