i was out scouting looking for tracks on cross country ski's today and i coverd alot of area where i have seen coyote tracks before....but this time i saw none. i got wondering if maybe they stick around water or try too. i know they cover a large range but i was thinking about checking some creek bottoms tomorrow. what does anyone think about this theory of coyotes sticking close to a water source?

My experience with coyotes is COVER the more the better, and the least people traffic, also sight advantage down wind and sunshine to sit in,That pretty sums it up.

Bocephus,

Yeah, they like the creek bottoms during deep snow.

But why? .....

I have pondered this and ....... pondered it!

Just theories.

I think that water ....... well we KNOW that water is critical. But take it a step farther.

What kind of snow?

In my neck of the prarrie, the 'otes stay down on the creek bottom when they can't get up good MPH. As soon as they are not floundering, and can run on top, they go more up onto hillsides and benches. Atleast that's my take on it.

you said down wind and lots of cover but you also said sunshine to sit in did you mean for you or the yote?
all the people i talk to say sit in the shade does your comment have something to do with the snow and camo?
happy huntin J-H

The coyotes I have observed over the years, like southern exposure just like a fox, they like to see also so they find cover they can see out of ,have sun, and still blend. If youve seen a few that were watching someone else,Ive seen them stand on there back feet to see over the top of a rise also jump up and down to see over without exposing there whole body (cant spell silowet)thats actually standing in one spot. This is not a one time deal as we have square mile sections and hunt with groups so you learn a lot fast.

Bo,
Depending on the amount of snow, new and old snow also. The coyotes in that particular area may be feeding in the deer yards. The deer will take to the sunny exposers and the coyotes will move with them and lay up not far away.

It has been my experience that when coyotes and/or fox lay up for the day the first thing they try to find is a place that is out of the wind. If they can find a place that is out of the wind and in the sun, they'll go for that; but their first priority is to find a place out of the wind.

Is that consistent with what you other long-time coyote/fox hunters have found?

I'm not sure about the water situation. Do they get enough liquid from the prey they eat or do they need additional water intake? Maybe someone in the Predator Biology thread would know?

During the day coyotes love to lay on the southern exposure side of large hay bales. They blend in perfectly, so you really have use binoculars before you get very close to the bales. If you get close to the bales that coyotes use you will notice that they pull straw down from the bale to make a soft bed. There will also be bits of fur from cleaning and scat around the bale to mark their territory.
