Coyotes got 2 chickens this morning, and...

Ruger American is probably the best rifle for the dollar that you will find. I have a compact rimfire version in .17hmr and i love it, the full size centerfires are even nicer. I have an AR in .223 but im probably going to get a centerfire in .22-250 because why not! Or teach her to use the AR!
 
I would have to agree on the muddy girl. I bought one in 7mm-08 for my lady to use on deer and its a nice little shooter. I'm not a fan of the axis guns but it works good for here. I have 110s, and 12s for savages and love them. Axis feel flimsy to me so I shy away. For someone who will only shoot a few times a year they are great. They shoot very well. Hers loves the hornady sst loads.
 
If we're talking relatively close (100 yds or under), grab a mini 14. slam in the magazine, rack it, and blast away. may not be the most accurate out there, but she'll go bang every time!

ARs are not complicated as long as you can keep one in the pipe, add kids or maybe a uncomfortable wife and a loaded AR is not a option sitting in the corner. I would say a bolt gun with a clip siting on top of the fridge would be ready to go enough if you got kids. Just a thought. But if no kids are involved and she is comfortable with a AR in the corner with one in the pipe, then there isn't much easier then flipping the safety off aiming and pulling the trigger. Sense you already got the ARs. But this could be a good excuse to get a new rifle sense the wife is all for it...

I agree with both of these posts. Even if you dont want to leave a round in the chamber leave the action open and magazine somewhere handy, insert mag hit the little button on the side of the action and shoot.

Much better defensive weapon also.
 
If a bolt gun, then the Ruger american compact in .223 ........ I have one and it's my everyday ranch rifle ....... I have better and much better rifles but the RAC is my number one take every day fire stick!

As to the Ar platform, all it takes is a little training ...... just a little ........ my grab it right now AR is a Carbon 15 ...... go ahead and pile on but this rifle has been a gem! Light and simple.

I keep it with an empty chamber and a 20 round magazine loaded and locked in place. A Bushnel holosight gives me day or night capability. The rifle is light and balanced enough that I have on a number of occasions used a pistol griped portable spot light and set the forearm on top and fired with one hand with the other holding the light with the Carbon 15 on top of it and killed close in 'otes around the house.

My wife does not like AR's ..... she does not like plastic semi's ...... and she shoots left hand as I do and when the casings come flying out near her face she swore off of them .... I take the hot brass flying close in stride ....... Oh well!

(Wife's idea of a good semi is the M1 Garrand)

What 2 mentioned already...get the Savage Axis II Muddy Girl in "Pink" and since it's the Axis II it will have the adjustable Accu-Trigger!

....and Keep Your Hands off it,it's Her Rifle!

I have the Savage Axis XP Camo Rifle with the Bushnell 3×9×40mm scope package in the .223 and its,and great shooting Rifle using the Hornady 55 grain V-max bullets.Its nice and light weight and does great in bad weather with the synthetic stock....it doesn't feel "Cheap" to Me,the Savage .17 WSM was more in that Category!

If money wasn't a factor, I'd get a Kimber Montana in .223 and top it with a 3-9 or 4-12 Leupold. It'd pull double duty for me as a calling rifle and a walking varmint rifle though.

If you want a decent rifle that wont cost too much and will be fine sitting in the corner awaiting the next hen house robbery, id choose a Savage Axis or Ruger American and top it with a Leupold VX-1 3-9.

Ive shot the Axis many times and it is a decent rifle that can usually be found around or under the $300 mark. The American isn't much more at around $350 street price. The American is probably a little better quality but those are my picks.
 
If she doesn't like complicated weapons then it would be hard to beat a single shot rifle/shotgun. I really like the look of little break barrels and you can find them used pretty cheap.

Here is an idea, take her to a cabelas or bass pro and let her look over everything. Her choice may surprise you. It might also help you out when the one that you want cost twice as much as option B. My wife picks hers and I pick mine. But she has surprised me on my birthday also. The old I would like one of these one day goes a long way.
