Coyotes in eastern Wyoming

Anybody do any coyote hunting in eastern Wyoming? I'm going to be out there in a few weeks hunting deer and antelope and was thinking about trying for some coyotes as well. I'll probably be doing a lot of hunting in the Thunder Basin northeast of Bill; anyone have any experience calling in that area? With all the rabbits we saw out there last time we visited one would think that the area would be covered up with predators.

As a side note, if any of you landowners need some deer or antelope killed let me know /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

scramjet I'm betting after a few days of the antelope barage coyotes will be a runnin and gunnin to find safehaven. If a guy can get into a low pressure area you may just find yourself in the honey hole.I'm betting there will be alot of banging by the goat killing crowd for sure.

ADCcoyote - I know what you mean about a lot of banging going on; it sounds like the 4th of July out there sometimes. I'm going to try to set up camp in a little more secluded area to try and combat the "runnin and gunnin". I think we're also going to get out there a few days before the season opens, so we may be able to get on a few dogs before the cavalry comes in. Does this area usually hold a fair amount of predators? We saw one coyote last time we were out there, but like you said that was during the artillery barrage so it's hard to say for sure how many inhabit the area. Thanks for your reply.

Was in that area last week filming a calling video.
Called twenty tree stands, saw thirty four coyotes.
Had shots at fifteen and got eleven. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Lots of rabbits
this year and lots of coyotes. Everything changes when
deer and antelope hunters get going. Got mostly older
coyotes but that is due to the way we were calling.

You had better have an electric call or be pretty good with the hand call. This area gets hammered hard especially later in the year when the snow flys.

Also spotlighting is legal in WY with written permission from the landowner, this is also a blast to do.

The calling should be great in the are you described. I called alot when I live in Douglas now I call a little farther north around Gillette. All the ranchers I have talked to said alot of dogs around this year. What area are your tags in?

LWILLIAMS-

My deer area is Region B, which goes from around Douglas all the way up to Gillette. I listed my antelope areas wrong and got stuck in area 24, wich is west of highway 59 from Wright to Gillette. Sounds like I'm going to be hunting a lot in your area! Do you know of any ranchers who are willing to let 4 Virginians hunt deer and antelope? The public land for antelope in area 24 is a little scarce, and it would be nice to have some private land to hunt. We'll probably focus on deer near the Rochelle Hills (I think that's what they're called, been a couple of years since I've been out there).

We may try and get together to call some yotes, let me know what you think.

I will watch out for ranchers who need stuff shot. It seems most everyone is leasing their land to guides anymore. There is quite a bit of public land around with good animals if you are looking in the right spot. I will look at your area and let you know what I come up with.

I just looked up the antelope areas and my tag is also in Area 24 I should know some public land in area 24 with antelope in it. When are you coming out.

We're going to be leaving Virginia on the 24th of this month. It'll take us a couple of days to get out there, then we'll do some scouting and hopefully some predator hunting before the season opens on the 1st.

What's the best way to approach ranchers about hunting on thier property? I don't mind paying a small trespass fee to hunt a good area, but I'm kinda concerned about just driving up to a ranch house and asking to hunt. Is this pretty much how it goes out west? I know here in the east some people really just want to be left alone and consider it a crime against humanity if you trespass on thier land to ask permission for anything.

Thanks for all the help guys, I'm really looking forward to this trip!

I hunted with Murphy Love in the Gillette area for several years running. Coyote hunting is terrific. We used Murphy's dogs but calling without the dogs is just about as successful. There was a bounty of $25.00 per dog when we hunted. I don't know if that is still the case.

I dont think to many ranchers will be offended if asked but alot of them will already have their land leased to guides. As far as I know there is no bounty on the dogs, but they lay where we shoot them most of the time. I would suggest putting an ad in the paper asking about the hunting land, You may get a couple of bites if not nothing lost.
