Coyotes on the Kenai

Good question. I know I have yet to spot a Yote here in the interior. I do hear about quite a few people seeing them SouthEast of here towards Delta. There's a guy on here from Homer (HomerDan) I think his handle is who gets Yotes down there. Maybe he'll dive in here and add some information. Happy to hear you made the move to Alaska.
 
I have a buddy who lives in Homer and he says he sees 'em all the time, I have taken a few from Point MacKenzie, and 2 from the Palmer hay flats... I have been calling for 4 years, the thing about Alaska is it's not like the states, I used to kill 30 or so yotes in Luziana in a year... They're more spread out here... I also heared there's a pretty good population around Talkeetna... Hope this answers your question... You'll probably end up seeing Lynx, Fox, Wolf and the occasional Wolverine, as opposed to Yote...

THere was another fella here that used to post and from what he posted he had pretty good success dwon that way for Alaskan standards.

I also have a few buddies down that way that hunt and trap ans I'll see what I can find out.

A few years back they were thick with mange down there too.

I've been out here on the Alaska Peninsula quite a while and have only seen 1 coyote. Have heard of others being trapped down by Port Heiden but think the numbers are way down because our wolf population appears to be growing and they keep them thinned.
If I get some coyote sounds on my caller I would like to try it for wolves because I have heard they will respond well to it as a territorial defense type of deal.

First thing you have to do is change your handle. Not much desert up Alaska way. I have some friends on the Kenai, was talking with one of them 2 weeks ago about this very subject. Unfortunately, you won't find an over abundance of coyotes as the wolves tend to take thier fare share. I would concentrate around populated areas first. Also, fox are plentiful in Alaska, give them a try. You'll have a blast.
 
I'll be a wolf hunter here in about a month, gonna be headin' toward Lake Louise, to help out the dwindling moose and caribou herd. I saw a nice set of coyote tracks out on the Palmer Hay flats last week, I put up a couple of snares but he shyed away from 'em. He must be an old smart one. I think I might try to track him down and introduce him the my .300 Wthby.... Why you wanna mess with coyote's when you can get a few hundred bucks for a nice Lynx or Wolf pelt? LOL

I started hunting coyotes down near Homer last fall. I had pretty good sucess (I think). About every 5th stand I'd get a dog in. I used a combination of mouth calls and my Foxpro. Haven't been out hard yet this year due to my work schedule, but I plan on hitting it next week. The dogs varied from above the river bottoms (Anchor and Stariski) to running the beach. I bought an FX3 this fall and plan to give it a workout. As a bonus, I ran into quite a few wolf tracks last winter but never called one in. I talked to the biologist up in Kenai and he said behind the Kenai airport or on the Kasilof river are where the largest concentrations. Too far for me to drive. I read that you saw one running the river. Mind if I ask which river?
