Coyotes Vs. Wolves

I think that they should be easy to tell apart when you put a normal sized coyote and a normal sized wolf together. But, how do I tell if I'm looking at a small wolf or a large coyote? There are Timber(Grey) wolves here in northern WI and as much as I'd like to, I don't want to shoot a wolf by mistake while coyote hunting. Is there an easy way to tell "on the fly"?

When in doubt, don't shoot.

Coyotes have LARGE pointy ears, in comparison to head size.

Wolves have rounded smaller ears.

Coyotes have a pointier snout.

wolves are kinda blocked, and appear shorter (comparison to head, again)

I wouldn't shoot one running if I wan't sure, it really just takes a glance to know though....except for redwolves..they look very simular to yotes. I'd do some web-searches and look at different pics of them and different angles.

I bear hunt in Wisconsin during their training season--just south of Lake Superior.
Got 2 good dogs killed by wolves there last August. In Wisconsin you can tell the differance cause your coyotes run away--your wolves ain't afraid of nothin. Here on the East side of Lake Nipigon we have mostly wolves but I did shoot a coyote in the driveway last nite. It was a good big one but I could tell right away it was what we call a brush wolf. First thing I notice about a timber wolf is they have a lot more leg under them, even the pups seem to be very long in the leg. first thing I notice about a brush wolf is that pointy muzzle. I am constantly watching the bay in front of my house and I can generally tell the differance when they are running down the lake. It's hard to describe but a brush wolf runs more like a dog or a fox and big timber wolf seems to float, kinda like a big bass boat on a choppy sea.
