So im looking into getting into crossbow hunting but I dont know who makes a good cross bow. Any advice on what brand and model I should go with.

JMO
you might want to give the Excalibur a try very simple (recurve)and very accurate , been shooting and hunting with a Excalibur Exocet for almost ten years and never a problem.
also you might try the horton vision (499.00 at natchez) a buddy has one and is happy with it.

EXCALIBUR ALL THE WAY!!!! NO BODY, and I mean NO BODY, makes a better crossbow. The aftermarket resale is good on them and the after markets parts and tuning options are unmatched. Check out the Excalibur crossbow forum.

excalibur
Mother in law has had hers for a few years good bow and great customer service we had to send the scope in for a repair last year windage was drifting. Had it back the next week.
What ever bow you buy I recommend that you lock tite all the screws the will vibrate loose

Got a buddy that shoots an Excaliber and really likes it. I shoot a Vision and like it also. The Excaliber has recurve limbs and is very wide IMO. The Vision is fast, quiet and very narrow and easy to manuver in the woods. Not taking anything away from the Excaliber, just to wide for me.

Ive been looking for this Mathews Crossbow but I cant find it anywhere. I just want to know the price. Ive been looking at a Barnett Ghost 350 I have read a lot of reviews and it sounds like the one I want. Do you guys know anything about them. If you know anything about the price of that mathews let me know because im intrested in that one

wife has a barnet wildcat, killed a cow elk, a 170" muley and the wife killed a 2x3 with it this first year hunting with it.
at 75 yards you can hit the x every shotwith it.
i was amazed how well it shoots.

I am a Mathews nut. I very rarely show any type of brand loayalty, mainly because no one pays me to hunt with their stuff. However I love; and only shoot Mathews bows. However after picking up the the new Mission crossbow I don't see how Mathews ever let their name be associated with it. It feels like complete junk. It is so light because it feels "plasticy" if thats even a word. And its very ergonmically un-balanced, and very over priced for the quality. It's a slap in the face to Mathews quality and engineering. After much deliberation I went with a Tenpoint Turbo XLT II and love the way it shoots and feels. It also has an acu-draw mechanism so my wife can draw it back and use it if shes hunting alone. It also has a dry fire inhibitor its absolutely impossible to fire it without a bolt loaded unless you're doing some un-explained tinkering. It's the easiest to use and safest crossbow on the market in my opinion.

I shoot the Wicked Ridge Invader made by Ten Point. I love it. Killed a nice 8 pt last year at 34 yds ranged. One of the nicest xbows around. Has anti dry firing feature. If you don't have a bolt loaded into it it won't fire. Also when you pull back the string it automatically goes into safe mode. Lots of good features on the bow. Check one out before you buy. EDIT I forgot to add. I shoot a Hoyt Alfa Tec Compound most of the time, but now and then my left rotor cuff gives me pain and I just can't pull back the Compound...Don't want to lower the poundage....so then I go to my backup cross bow.

Compared to the other TANKS we work on I found the light mass weight of the mission to be a nice feature.
It is quiet, smooth shooting, narrow and easy to cock. 360fps out of a 160lb 14 inch power stroke is no dog.
I'm not a real crossbow fan (play nice! I think they have their place) so for me to talk one up is out of the norm.

Excalibur is nice and easy to change string. But its really big to have up in a climber and stalk with. I think the Best deal is to wait and see if you can get a barnett predator on sale. It is heavy but thats good for aiming. I leave this crossbow cocked for 8-12 hours all the time. No problems had it three years with multiple deer kills. After this season i plan on sending it back to barnett for new string and cables for safety reasons.

well these are simply the easiest crossbows to care for! put a new string on in a couple minutes!

I picked up a used Tenpoint Titan it had broken the string when the original owner had it and he had it restrung by some guy at the local sporting goods store, but the guy had used the wrong string and he couldn't get it to shoot right so he went and bought one of the newer Titans sold me his old one very cheap,
Anyway I sent it to Tenpoint they replaced the string, cable's wheels everthing but the stock the bow and trigger I also bought a new scope and mount from them, they only charged me for the scope and mount. I even told them I got it used they just transfer the warranty to me . It's been shooting great for the last three years if I ever need a new one It will more than likely be another Tenpoint

Thinking out loud:

I'm a Tenpoint fan. Will be hunting with my old Hunter's Huntmaster (same basic bow as Tenpoint Titan before company name was changed) for the last couple of times this weekend. I just sold it for $300 (pretty good resale).

My new Tenpoint Turbo XLT II should be here by Wednesday. All I can say is it is one badazz SOB IMO. Fast, compact, light, and good trigger. I could have bought any bow I wanted, and selected it above all others. I have a Leupold Crossbones scope coming to replace the $189 Chinkwanese scope that it comes with.

My bud shoots a new Tenpoint Titan Extreme. Great bow for the price and backed by notably good customer service.

As for other bows my opinions are:

Excalibur are great bows, but much too wide for my liking. They are a PITA in tight quarters and treestands, IMO.

Parker makes good bows. 2 buds have them. One a Tornado, and the other the newer Tornado F4. They are very nice, but not as nice as the tenpoint Turbo XLT II for the price. I like the stocks on the Tenpoints much better.

I like Darton bows, but they are heavy.

Steer clear of Barnett and Horton. They are improving quality/CS wise IMO, but it would be hard to sink any further at this point. My bud has a Horton Team Realtree and it isn't that bad but....

As for optics, most all bows come with Chinese scopes on them. None are very impressive, optically. A Leupold or Nikon is a vast improvement IMO. I'm not in love with the Nikon reticle, but the optics are pretty good and so is the price.

Just my 2¢.......

yes excaliburs are a very wide bow. I've hunted the same properties for about 18 years I guess so my tree stands are sorted, trimmed, ect.

way back when ( early 90's ) the only crossbows around these parts were horton, barnett. I burnt through center servings like nothin. Cracked limbs, cables, you name it!

Then got my 1st computer and was able to research stuff in 1997. I had to order my 1st excal. from danny miller. never looked back since.

a tenpoint would be my choice on a compound xbow. possibly a darton serpent.

Excalibur and ten point are top of the line. However, if you are on a budget Parker and Horton make solid bows that my dad and I routinely kill deer with to 40 yards.

I have a Parker tornado that I love. I don't use it much anymore as I prefer to use a compound. My dad has the newer Horton lightweight bow. He killed a deer at 41 yards clean using the provided scope.

My tip would be to be sure to shoot them all first. Triggers on crossbows are not commonly adjustable and are far from created equal.

Also consider the limb width. Not a big factor until you want to shoot behind you in a tree stand.

I was told once not to put a non crossbow scope on a crossbow as crossbow scopes were designed to handle the reverse recoil of a bow. Rifle scopes will eventually break from the movement they were not designed for. But I have no source or proof on this. So do what you want with that info.

I live within ten miles of both the Horton and ten point factories. I had great luck with Hortons customer service in the past. Can't speak to ten point. They were out of my price range when I was buying them.
