Hi guys, just got done watching Doggin II,again, i just rented it from the local video store....was wondering how well you guys think a Cur hound would work in MI.??we don't have the open territory like they showed in the video.

They would work just fine in your area. I have 3. Go into the Kemmer Stock Mountain Cur web page and start reading about them and pickup a copy of Full Cry and do more reading. Just try and get a pup from a local breeder. Just remember pups from the east are more squirrel dogs and dogs from the south tend to be more hog type dogs. Just do your home work. Get a young pup and let them bond to you 12weeks or younger. Good luck.

The Kemmer Mt. Cur is everything it's cracked up to be and more. They originate here in my county of Tennessee. Lots of folks have them here and you won't find a better dog anywhere.

Answer: No, they are a very intelligent dog.
Most hounds are stupid to the bone. All they know is what their nose tells them.
Curs are an all around good dog.

curs are quiet on trail with maybe a bark when thay find trail otherwise thay only bark at tree or at bay and thay do come back after a while to check back and then thay are off again. fun dog to have!

Barking on a hot or cold track is a death sentence for a Cur dog in the south. We use Cur dogs to trail/find, bay, and catch hogs with. Any barking on the track before they get the hog found and stopped sends the hog running to the horizon i.e. long races, lost dogs, and no catch.

Silent trailing is what most Cur dog hog hunters want and need. The preferred and desirable Cur dog hunts and trails silently until the game is found then they bay loudly and keep the hog in one place until help arives. Some Cur dogs are a little mouthy on a hot running track. The mouthy ones are usually culled quick as they can cause the others to start barking.

Nitefright,
My apologies to all hound owners. Didn't mean it quite the way it came out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
I own beagles and have owned a Blue Tick, so what I really meant to say is that a cur isn't as prone to barking the way a hound does. I'm not trying to lump all hounds together as I am no expert on them. I have a little female beagle that only opens up when she's hit a hot trail, however my little male beagle never shuts up. I haven't figured out if he's hard headed or stupid yet, but he is only seven months old so I'll give him some time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Once again, no offense meant. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Bopeye, I see you're from Crossville. We came down last year & went hunting at Caryhonas Lodge for hogs with dogs. It was my first time on a hunt like that. We had a good time & the food was excellent. Really nice area. See ya! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Do you remember Patrick Garrison? It's his family that runs the place. He and I went to school together.
My hunting partner, Coyotehunter1, use to be a guide at Caryonah.
We still hunt the outskirts of it for coyotes.
See ya. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Bopeye, I've seen em dumb but I've also seen em REAL smart, it's just an inbred instict for a hound to be mouthy. NO offense taken at all, and I hope you did'nt think I was gettin snippy with you!
BTW Curs are definately one of the smartest breeds.

I saw my partner's handle in this topic and thought I'd see what trouble he was into now. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I don't run with the hounds anymore but over the years we have owned a few dozen.
IMHO, on coyotes, it could be a problem without having older experienced dogs to train the young ones plus a Kemmer pup could get a little expensive. I've seen a bloodline pup go for $500.00 to $1000.00. That's weaned, not trained.

Robert Kemmer, the originator of the Kemmer Stock Mt. Cur was from Grassy Cove, close to Crossville, and worked at Renegade Hunting Lodge as a guide when I was at Caryonah. I was lucky enough meet the man and see some of his hog hounds at work. Great man and dogs.

A little history:

Hey CH1, I noticed in your little history excerpt the name of A.D. Ledbetter. He was the grandpa to the preacher I work with. The dog "Dan Boone" was named by the preacher when he was just a few years old. This was the dog that killed the bobcat in my other thread.

Or so this what was told to me by Preacher McCoy. His momma was a Ledbetter.

Bopeye...
That sounds like the real McCoy! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Sorry, couldn't pass that one up...

I know a few of the older McCoys, most are from around the Genesis area. Good folks!
