Custom Wooden Shooting Sticks

In the predator hunting video "operation predator", Ed Wimberley uses a set of wooden shooting sticks on all of his stands... Can anybody tell me where I can get a set of those sticks ? I'd be very grateful...

Make them, Use 5/8 dowl rod from a home improvement store. Drill a 1/4" hole approx 5" from top and use a 1/4" bolt and nut. You may want to put a washer at the head of the bolt, 2 washers between the dowls and a washer at the nut, cut off the excess bolt right against the nut. I wrapped mine with parachute cord where my rifle rest. and I drove small finish nails in the legs so that they dont slip on the ground.
Hope this helps.
Also, dowl rods are 36" long

I made mine from a a recipe from Varmint Al's web page he sues 3/4 inch oak square sticks counter sink the bolt holding it togeather use the nails on the ends to stick in the ground and ice ans you got em.

Tim /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif you've had two /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gifshooters chime in there opinions. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Yeah we better /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif build them ourselves. : /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I use the doweel rods too. Drill a very small hole through them and put a thin nut and bolt through them aand crush the nut in a vise. Also I sharpen the bottom ends on both of them to keep them from sliding. I tried putting a nail in the bottom of them but the you have to lift them to move them. Its easier to slide them.

I wanted to thank all you gentlemen for your input on this shooting stick issue... Iv'e been using a "pole-cat" system designed by Stoney-Point, and for the most part Iv'e been real happy it... However, they do have a tendency to slide and thier stability goes down as the wind goes up... I went ahead and built a set with 3/4" dowels as suggested.. I played around with them inside the house today and I think they are gonna work out pretty good... I'll field test them on some ground squirrels this weekend... and thanks again !!

Hi BillRuger,

I see your a firefighter, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif, I was, retired after thirty years of fun. I made mine using 3/8" fiberglass fence post for electric fence from farm supply store. I cut them down to 38", put about 8" of 3/8" rubber hose over the ends the rifle will rest on, then roll four or five of the castration rubbers that are used on sheep about an inch or so from bottom of hose ends for the pivot. They work great and cost about five dollars to make.

I used the fiberglass electric fence post trick as well.

On used and weathered ones, watch for those nasty slivers!!!

I used sand paper to clean mine up.

I also use rolled up rubber bands spaced at intervals along the lower legs to eliminate the rattle of the legs wacking each other.

PS. The idea of using castrating bands keeps some sheep and cattle sleeping better at night! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Suggestion on the shooting sticks. Drill a 3/16 (depending on size of insert)hole in the bottom of the dowell. Glue an aluminum arrow insert in the hole using superglue. You can use a variety of arrow tips for the feet depending on terrain. I use a 125 grain bludgeon tip most of the time but also use field tips. Won't slip a bit.

i also used the 5/8 dowl rods but instead of using a bolt through the rods i took a 6 inch bungy cord and wrapped around the sticks about 5 inches from the top.

My sticks are an old tent pole, the fiberglass kind that break down with a slingshot rubber tied on for a pivot point, and field points glued in the bottom. They're not the greatest but will be my backups someday.

I use corded tent pole sections, cut them down to however long you like. I like having 2 seperate sticks so you can use them like they did in the olden days. Before that I just used 2 hickory sticks. Works for me.. Good luck

I made mine out of the gray 3/4" elec. cond. hard plastic. 3" from the top drille and use 1/4" bolts and camo. plastic won't mar the stock grind a slant at end so they won't slip and your done about three dollars. jim
