Cut Shells (The Poor Mans Slug)

Glad to hear they work. Just curious, was this out of a choked shotgun? Single shot shotgun with fixed modified choke.

I happen to know that it will go through a 3/4 in board on the side of a barn, and what it will do to the radiator of a john deer tractor on the other side of the wall. I also know how much trouble a 12 year old boy will be in when dad gets home! Woops!

I can't see how this can be a safe practice. A loaded 12 gauge shell is larger then the end of the bore. Pressure has to increase dramatically shoving the end of the shell casing out the bore. The more choke in the barrel, the worse it would be.

I'd like to see what it does to a coyote. Being basically a shotgun version of a glaser slug does it dump it's load inside and not blow big holes in the off side? Anyone have some ballistic gelatin around for some penetration tests?

Curious, Chris

My thoughts exactly. I'll pass.

According to family legend, this buck was shot with what was referred to as a "cut load" by my step-grandfather in the UP of Michigan way back when. It is a poachers load as it is illegal to carry slugs when bird hunting outside of the deer season. As it was explained to me, a person would carry one of these "cut" loads in his pocket to use if he saw a deer he wanted to shoot. If stopped by a warden, it looked just like the other loads if the cut was done right above the brass with something sharp, like a razor. Back then, paper loads were all that they had and it worked well, according to the stories my uncles tell me.

I would not advise others on specific loads for that matter as a general rule,no loss that I can see. Personally, I would not show folks something like this anyway, you never know how it will be applied.

I have no way to measure pressures anyway, but I do know that folks shoot slugs in a full choke, the ammo/gun manufacturers know this will happen, not the same really as the slug does not have to deform as much as the shell is bigger, but the shell is more malleable.

As stated, we did it some, but not as a regular practice, but something to do if needed, that's why we were taught this.
BTW, we did it with a full choke, but admittedly without pressure gauges.

If someone is uncomfortable with it, they should not do it, I sure agree with that.
