Cutting 243 barrel for silencer?

My father has a 243 with a 22" barrel he's getting his suppressor back soon an he needs to get the barrel threaded.... he thinking about cutting the barrel down also... would 18" be to short? Anyone running that length an wish it was longer?
It's his night time setup running thermal...

I have a 22-250 that had a 22" barrel, and I had it cut and threaded to 18" for the suppressor. I lost about 100 fps, so wasn't significant for me. Shoots great and continues to be very accurate. I can' say about the 243 for sure, bu think it would be fine.

I am going to do the same with my 243 T/C encore and put a suppressor on it, all the guys I have talked to and information I have found said it will be ok with 18" length, you will lose some velocity but at the range I shoot it will not make any difference.

I shoot nearly everything suppressed and I had my 22-250 chopped down to 18in and would absolutely do it again, but, keep in mind even with a suppressor going from 22 down to 18 it will be louder and I'd check with the suppressor manufacture of your can to make sure it's rated for a 18in .243 because it may or may not be rated for that.

I run a 22 Creed and an 6 Creed both at 18" and to be completely frank...If I need a new barrel at any point in the future, I may do 14" as I have an SBR registered action.
Even that...I would have no hesitation doing 16" running a suppressor for the non-NFA crowd

This is what it looked like when I was done...18" 22 Creed. I changed glass since then but you can see on this rifle, I would still be able to functionally cut another 3-4" off if I wanted to. 3200 fps kills them just as dead as 3600

I'm not sure I understand to reason for a suppressor. I was thinking they lower recoil, is that right? Not to lower sound are they? If they reduce recoil why would anyone need on on something like a 243? I have a 243 and recoil is just about nill, I wouldn't give up 100fps just to make it lower!

Does it lower recoil? Absolutely yes.
Is it as much as a brake? No
It absolutely lowers recoil, but thats not the major (or even 2nd or 3rd reason) for having a suppressor.
It SIGNIFICANTLY reduces noise.

Thanks! I'd been wondering about that. But noise doesn't bother me either. When I go to the range and shoot, I simply remove my hearing aids!

I feel ya. I never use to notice shooting once or twice in the field, but now that I run suppressed...I'll literally NEVER hunt without one. I still do competition with a brake, because everyone else is using one. Doesn't make sense to be quite if everyone else is loud as hell...but If I went out hunting and forgot my suppress...I'd go home to get it.

The main reason I got into suppressors was due to people hearing my shots at night, thinking poachers were at work.

Also, the ability of follow up shots when missing or calling in multiples cannot be understated either.

Hearing safe, lesser recoil, and better accuracy are all bonuses.

I have seen some 16" 243 winchesters.. I was kinda curious about the velocity... its probably not to bad.. personally I like short barrels most of my ar15s are 12.5" in different calibers...
But just not to familiar with the 243 an im sure there were guys in here that have went down this road..

Do it. You'll enjoy the better balance of the shorter barrel and you won't miss a 100 or so fps. I have 2 22-250s at 18" and a 300wm at 20".

Night time, day time, any time, I'd MUCH rather shoot, anything and everything, suppressed versus not.

My KelTec PMR30 is one of the funniest guns to shoot that I own but it's also the one I dislike shooting the most. Pistols in 22mag are sooo miserably LOUD and they have such a deafening crack to them. Even with good ear protection they're loud and I generally wear ear plugs and muffs. Due to their design KelTec doesn't recommend using a threaded barrel and running them suppressed so I have to shoot it bare which is a real bummer because the ugly little things are fun as hell to shoot and shooting one with a can on it would make things so much better.

Most people that haven't spent much time shooting things suppressed generally don't see the benefit but I know quite a few guys that initially said ehh not interested don't need one that now have multiple.

100% agree! Everything I've bought or had built in the last few years has either had the barrel chopped or I had nothing more than a 22in barrel installed on them. I have a 25 SAUM in the build process right now and I haven't officially decided on the length yet but the longest it'll be is 22 and I very well may go 20.

Friends don't let Friends shoot Keltecs.🤣
Just funning.

Once you try a suppressor you will
Never want to shoot without one. They lower the blast which makes it much more pleasant to shoot for me. I also like them for hunting. You can shoot and it won’t scare every animal away that is near you. All around better in Everyway. Should be a law that everyone has to use one haha

With that said I use suppressors on longer barrels. My 22-250 is 22ā€. And my 6 creed is 24ā€. I don’t mind the barrel lengths.
Sure Shorter barrels are handy but the longer barrel is faster and quieter
