Cutting a new crown cost?

Whats the going rate for cutting a new crown? My smith used to do it for free while I waited but he passed away and those days are over. I'd like to get a 11 degree target crown on my 40X 22LR. A store in Tulsa wanted $100. I thought that was a little high. Maybe I been out of touch to long.

Psycodog,

I needed to crown a Cooper rifle in .17 fireball. I rented an 11 degree crowning tool from 4D Reamer Rental. The tool was sharp and the rifle turned out perfect.

adco charges $60 for a barreled action, $30 for a plain barrel (like an AR barrel, 10/22 barrel, etc)

ive had them do multiple barrels - recrown is part of their threading service - every one shoots nice.

turn around time is good, i typically see 7-10 day door to door service from them - but i'm only an hour drive away so even UPS ground is "overnight" for me.

If they are relatively close so you can easily drop it off versus having to ship it as long as they do good work even if they charge a little more I'd opt for using someone local to you. There are a lot of benefits to establishing yourself with a good local shop.

I checked today with another local shop. He charges $75 and a 7 week wait. I have another smith to call. He's some what local and I've been told he's really good and has a fast turn around time. I just need to call him. I got spoiled with the smith that past away.

Not sure what a recrown would be, I know the 11 degree crowns are usually the most money. My smith charged I think $150 per barrel to cut to length, thread the muzzle, put a standard 90 degree crown on it and make thread protectors. I honestly cant remember, should've got an itemized reciept.

I did something last night that will probably make gunsmiths cringe. I used a brass screw with lapping compound in a drill and gently polished the crown. It did make it look better and I checked it with a Q-tip and it is very smooth now. I figure if it screwed it up, I would have to get it crowned anyway. I will say it "looks" a lot better. I'm going to the range and see if it made any difference other than appearance. I may have gotten lucky or maybe not. I can still have a new crown cut if it didn't help.

Well, I just got back and it sure didn't seem to hurt it any. The rifle sure seems to like Eley. Luckily thats what I have coming. Likes Aquila Rifle Match to and I have a brick of it.

P.S. I am an old guy. LOL

Sunday was a good day. I tried out a new to me gunsmith and got my 40x barrel crowned. Pretty close to the house, real nice shop and a very nice, knowledgeable guy. His price was more than reasonable and did it while I waited and on a Sunday morning to boot.

I watched him set up. He indexed my barrel off the bore. Had 0 runout on his indicator which I thought was cool. He joked and said that's close enough. Then cut me a nice recessed crown. After he finished he gave my barrel a real good wipe down then cold blued the fresh crown. Charged me $25. He said if he can't do it right, he won't do it at all. I like that to.
