CVA Accura v2 vs T/C Triumph...I need some help

Hello everyone,

I need some help deciding on a new muzzleloader for an upcoming elk hunt in new mexico. I have pretty much narrowed down my choices to the 2 rifles listed above. I would like to hear of some real world experiences from my fellow hunters. Anything as far as accuracy, dependability, problems, anything will help. It will be my first muzzleloader, and I am very excited about the new challenge. Also if you guys have any input about bullets or powder choices it will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Rick

250 grain Shock Wave by T/C and Triple 7 powder!!!
Not to big on CVA stuff so would lean toward the T/C but I would look at the Omega. The Z-7 is there bottom end, but they SHOOT!!

I shot a very nice 5X5 bull on a New Mexico hunt several years ago. Unless they have changed the laws then you can use a scope on your rifle. I shot mine without a scope. But I prefer no scope on my MZ.

The rifle I took with me was a Knight MK-85 in 50 caliber. I prefer that rifle over the two above for a few reasons. First because of the trigger. The trigger in the rifles you listed above are not that good.

I also prefer to shoot a heavy conical at elk. A large chunk of lead at a reasonable velocity. I cast a 525 grain lead conical for my MZ. The bull I shot was just a tad over 140 yards. The 525 grain bullet did unbelievable damage to the bull. He walked about 30 yards from where I shot him. And he was hunched over for all 30 yards. He barely made the 30 yards. Conicals are king on large game like those elk.

The MK-85 has always been more acurate for me with the large conicals.

So with a better trigger and a rifle that tends to shoot about anything you can load in it??

If I had to choose between the two you listed it would clearly be the TC. However those triggers are not real good on most I have handled.

Look for a good used Knight MK-85. I have seen them for as low as $250 in excellent condition. And that is a real deal. Heck the adjustable target trigger they use on those rifles cost close to $200. Tom.

I have both. But my Accura is the V1 not the V2. They are both great guns. They are both accurate for me. You cant go wrong with either one. It would really depend on which one you like better and feels the best.

If you are considering useing Blackhorn209 powder, (which is all the rage in muzzleloading right now) keep in mind the CVA breechplugs have not been 100% reliable for some people. Some have hangfires etc. I have been shooting 100g of Blackhorn in my Accura with a MMP sabot and Winchester W209 primers and 250g Barnes Expander bullets and I have had no problems at all. It also shoots Hornady 250g XTPs well. CVA is now offering a breechplug specifically for BH209 as a option.

My Triumph shoots 250g Shockwaves very well. The TC guns are more suited for sabots because the bore is a little tighter than the CVA so if you want to shoot conicals I would lean toward the Accura. In fact I cannot get a 300g FPB down the bore of my Triumph.

I agree with HOGGHEAD, consider conicals for elk. Take a look at Thor bullets and Hornady FPB. The 300g Thor bullet in a Accura would be deadly on Elk.

Custom Wal-mart Krylon paint job on the TC. It turned out OK.

Have had a bunch of muzzleloaders, several T/C's (4 encore 50's and some I can't remember), a few savages (MLII's/smokeless), few remingtons and most recently a cva accura v2. The accura is by far my favorite, is very accurate, sweet trigger and dang easy to clean. Done ALOT of load testing, using lots of different combos, but can't get over how well the heavier platinum powerbelts shoot, even at 200yds.
Tried all the different powders, pellets, etc, have yet to find anything that rivals BH209,..my opinion.

I prefer Knight muzzleloaders.

My bud has a new Triumph that I sighted in with a new Redfield for him. It's not too bad of a set up. My other bud has an Omega and a Knight. Both my Knight and his will out shoot the Omega and Triumph rifles. No news there.

CVA is pure junk and they couldn't pay me use their products........

Ive had a Knight and it shot great i gave it to my step son it used #11 caps, then i went with the CVA Optima i hated it it shot good but had to be swabed every shot and cleaned after every 5 to stay accurate and no matter how good i cleaned it and no matter how much oil i put down the barrel it would have some lite rust on a clean patch after a few days. I finaly went with a TC Omega and it shoots great easy to clean i can get several shots before i have to do anything the only thing i dont like is how hard it is to stuff a bullet down the barrel but with the easy load sabots thats not a problem anymore, CVAs arent junk but they arent far from it spend alittle more and get alot more.

+1
ive got that exact set-up,except i use 280gr powerbelt platnuim.
dropped deer in its tracks at 200yds

I would pick the TC but instead of the Triumph I would pick the Omega. The Knight MK-85 was a great muzzleloader and you can find some great deals on them. Be careful though as a lot of these rifles were not maintained properly and have rust issues. I had a Knight LK93 and it too was a great little muzzleloader.
