cylinder bore shotgun

I have been seeing a few post with guys talking about using cylinder bore shotguns. I have an 870 with an 18" homedefense cylinder bore barrel(no restriction at all) How many of you have used these barrels for calling. I have been thinking about shooting 3" #2shot (not buckshot) mostly for fox when I am calling thick cover (under 35yards) any input???? I am going to try patterning the gun tomorrow, so I will also let you all know my results, but any info I could get b4 I go out would be helpfull. I am going to try #2shot, #4buck, and 00 buck. And then I will be iceing down my shoulder afterward...LOL

Patterning will be the key. For fox at night and under 30 yards or so, I think you'll find a load that should work alright. Don't overlook the BB size shot. You skipped from #2's all the way up to No. Four Buck and missed that BB size shot. I'd be willing to bet you find a good load in the BB loads.
 
Why would you want to shoot an open cylinder? I would think you'd restrict yourself to only very close shots? Why wouldn't you want to be able to kill that fox out there at 45 or 50 yards?

I agree with GC that BB's are a nice compromise on shot size. It's all I use and works well on both foxes and coyotes.
 
Do you two use "BB" steel, I cant find anything other than BB Steel shot around here. I used to use size BB in copper plated lead which worked great, but now its nowhere to be found.
 
Nope, I use either lead or hevi-shot BB's. You can have your local sports shop order it for you. They don't often carry it in Walmart and other such stores.

Don't use steel for predators. It's really feeble.
 
Ive done some searching and it looks like Federal makes a 3" 12G in size BB lead. Next call; the gun shop to order some /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I'd bet ya that if the gunshop balks at ordering it you can find it online at either Cabela's, Bass Pro, Midway, Graf & Sons, Natchez, or Mack's Prarie Wings.
 
Not a very good choice. If they come in to 15 yards you will do fine, but a coyote at 40 and you probably wont down him for good unless you get really lucky. I put 3 shots dead center into a coyote at probably 50 with my modified and he still ran off, #4 hi base. If coyotes are involved I would not go out without a super full turkey tube. I dont even like shooting predators at all with a shotgun though. Id rather take a 22lr than a shotgun.
 
GC. You got it. #4 is simply not big enough for predators unless they are inside of 20 yards. Why not move up to something large enough and have it be good to 40 yards or slightly more???

This may change your mind. A 12 gauge loaded with 3" shells in #4 BUCH SHOT will sent 41 pellets of .24 diameter down range,every time you pull the trigger. At 40-45 yrds, you cant beat that performance with a 22 LR. Just remember to keep shooting untill they quit moving. Shotgunning coyotes is great fun.
 
IMHO #4 buck is superior to 00 buck for the above stated reason. It's like shooting 41 22 bullets with one shot and the range is great. As far as the choke goes you're advised to not use a full choke with buckshot. You will shoot out the choke. I've seen it done. It happens over the course of several shots not just one time. With steel shot in T or F size you will ost certainly damage the choke as there is no give. You can get away with shooting the smaller sizes for a longer period of time but modified is recommended for a good reason. I think Dead Coyote is an alloy designed to be shot in older guns but even so. In T size a more open choke is better. The hardness of the shot produces tight patterns anyway as there's little or no flattening or distortion of the pellets.
 
Ive been using remington express BBs in my winchester with imp. modified Only a few had to have a second shot.Remington has ties to Hevi-shot and has done some testing on the different shot and choke sizes.Check out Hevi-Shots web site. It mite help you out some.My 1200 only shoots 2 3/4,if you can figure out what thier shot size {B} stands for let me know.
