CZ 452...Which Caliber?

I have wanted one of these for a while now. I am thinking about putting one of these on my wish list. I just don't know which caliber and want some opinions.

22LR... I have several 22's but don't know that you can have too many. They are cheap to shoot and do work wonderful for small game.

22WMR... I don't have one and never have. I know they are a big step up in killing efficiency over the 22LR. Ammo is more expensive. I personally feel that it is more effective than the 17 HMR past 50 yards from my experiences (not scientific.)

17HMR... I have had a ruger in this caliber. I wasn't over impressed with it. It was devastating on small game within 50 yards, however after that it seemed to lose alot to me. Ammo is expensive. I have a 17 Fireball but don't seem to get it out very often.

i have the 452 hmr. like you said the ammo is very expensive, however i dont seem to have any problems with it past 50 yards. i often get open gut shots at 100 to 130 yards. very fun rife. what can i say its a cz. you know what your getting out of the box reguardless of the caliber.

I am tired of both, ammo cost too much, i can load centerfire for the price of 17hmr and 22mag, and shotgun shells are still cheap. ed

What about HM2? It's supposed to be a great caliber, especially for rimfire fanatics. The HM2 is supposed to be a good small game caliber and really flat shooting. Ammo isn't bad either.

I have a 452 in .22lr that I really like. If you get one, you'll like it, but if you already have several you might want a little change. I'm going to go with a .17hmr next, I'm pretty sure.

I've heard of problems with the 452s in 22 mag. Something about the ejection or something. It can usually be fixed, though.

Go over to rimfirecentral.com and do some reading on the CZ sections stickies.

Good luck!

The problem is actually with feeding, not ejection,, but you were close..
I got one on a trade that I wanted to shoot treed Coon and Bobcat's with. I've shot the Win 40grainers for years with great results and had no intention of changing. Well the dang thing would never feed the Winney's or any other HP. Just the plastic bullets. I read all about the fixes over on rimfire central and tried every thing they suggested without any luck. I swear I had that magazine apart at least fifty times. Since the gun was used and the mag was tampered with by yours truly, I didn't expect any kind of warranty. I ordered a brand new mag from CZ and it was no better.. I sent it back and got another that was the same. I was pretty disapointed, as I'm not one to give up easily but I finally dumped the thing..
Sooooo,,, even though I'm a huge fan of CZ's I'd warn against the 452 in 22WMR unless you only plan on shooting poly tipped bullets...

I second the idea of the M2 if ya just want a fun shooter for Squirrls and such.

Good luck whatever you choose..

Ha, I was just looking on rimfirecentral, getting ready to go back and edit my post before someone caught me

I knew it was something along those lines, but I haven't really been intersted in the 22 mag, so I hadn't really looked into it.

There's the link. Like RePete said, it seems to only be a problem with non-poly tipped bullets.

17hm2 is a great option.

It shoots almost as flat as 17hmr out to 100 yards. It doesn't tear small game up as bad as hmr. Its typicaly very accurate out to 100 yards. Right now on GB you can pick up 2,000 rounds for 187 delivers. That is a good price, shop and be patient it goes on sale for cheap. Its basicaly like the ultimate HV 22. The problem with HV .22 is they are not as accurate as subsonic because they go from supersonic to subsonic during flight. The hm2 doesn't have the same problems as the 22lr HV. Its just a flat out tack driver.

getting a 22 LR in a lux, super lux, or Full Stock is great too if you wnat to shoot with irons. The irons are the best factory ones you could buy. Add a JnP ghost ring for like 20 bucks and its a super effective short range small game rig. The super lux has a 28" barrel and that makes it awesome with subsonics. Its like as loud as a high power air rifle.

CZ has dicontinued the 452 american to replace with 455. They will slowly phase out all the 452 guns. They are also dicontinueing the hm2 for now. If you want a 452 american or a 17hm2 get it now.

If you want to shoot any predators like fox or an occasional short distance coyote 22mag is the only way to go but the cz's seem to like the 30 and 33 gr ammo. Not great for predators if it doesn't like 40 gr. EVery gun is different.

I have four 452s, a full stock in 22LR, an american in 22LR, an american in 17HMR, and a lux in 22 WMR. I would be hard pressed to choose between them, but the first to go would be the 17 HMR as it just doesn't impress me much. All of them are accurate enough to do anything you want to do with them.

Go hm2 if you want something different. Looking at a Savage or two and deciding on hm2 or LR, or both. If you want to hunt, and have a better 22LR for hunting, go with the hm2. The ballistics are 80% of what the HMR is, and they are half the price.

The trigger on the 452 can be made to be really nice. Get a yodave kit on ebay. Less than $15. The yodave is exactly like the Brooks, but he won't rip you off like Brooks will.

Thanks for all of the replies. I am very suprised by the Mach 2 recommendations. I had a 10/22 converted to it a few years ago and then got rid of it. I actually thought that the Mach2 would be dead and gone by now. The one that I had was extremely accurate and I actually liked it better than I did my HMR.

I've an American and a Scout both in .22lr Would love to have a Scout in 17M2. I got the Scout for when my boys get a bit older, they are 2&3 right now. It's my squirrel gun right now has a Weaver 2x7 and a Brooks trigger kit in it. When the boys get a little older I'll make the trigger heavier and remove the scope so they can learn to use iron sights. Also I have the single shot mag put away for them. I've got a few 5 round and ten round mags that I use right now. I'd say go for the Scout if you decide on .22lr

peace.

I have them in 22LR, 17M2, and 17HMR...All shot very well.

I'd have to say the 17M2 is the most fun to shoot. Very affordable campared to the HMR.

Can even kill squirrels out past 100 yards with the 22LR, can kill them beyond 150 yards with either 17 cal.
