Pete's right about that. As a matter of fact, everything that I have bought for my .17 Rem in the last several years I have gotten off the internet. I used to buy everything off the shelf (I still do sometimes) but 90% I buy online. Cheaper, easier and right to your door.

Agreed......sure...I try to buy from my LGS but I'm not going to give up the fun of shooting 17 cal's just because they don't want to stock components....


Oh....and yes!!!! CZ should have made the 17Rem on the American platform a decade ago.....

Well...no. Not really. I prefer shooting the bit heavier Varmint models because of of the bit longer barrel and it's a bit more steady off the bench. I like the added heft of the Varminter. But accuracy wise there is very little difference. At least with mine anyway.

Matter of fact, I like the varmint so much that I sent my the barreled action of my .221 Fireball to ER Shaw to have it made it a 24" varmint weight just like my .17 Rem. Going to keep it a Furball but I just think that will be a lot of fun. And I will be the only person that I know what has one too.
 
I appreciate all the input guys,there is such a great wealth of knowledge here amongst this group of hardcore hunters.
I'm used to humpin a 12-15lb varmint rifle n from what I can gather the 527 varmint doesn't weigh much more than 9# scoped n loaded,many of my deer rifles have weighed more. I think if the fit and finish are what I think I'm going to love this rifle.
I currently don't have a varmint rifle that makes me not want to buy another.....I have my go to deer rifles (2)inside 200yds n beyond 200yds,both 30 cal. and lust for no others. My varmint rifle jones is brutal,I've owned sooooo many but never found "the one" I currently have 2 700 remingtons a 223,243 both are great rifles but neither scratch the itch.
I'm going to get the CZ 527 17 Rem. and top it w/a Nikon Monarch 4x16x50 SF.
I've owned several .204s & 250s, IMO they are overkill on a 6-15# woodchuck. For the most part 99% of my shots fall under 350yds and this round will make shot placement imperative which I enjoy because it sharpens me up for deer season,I pick a spot instead of finding center mass and touchin it off as 99% of all cityslickers do.
 
You have put a some thought into this RS so good going. And I bet you're really going to like that new .17 Remmy. It sounds just about perfect for what you are wanting.

One thing for sure is that you will not be wincing in pain from recoil when you shoot it. Love my sub bores for that reason.

I went through the same exact dilemma a couple months ago. After hearing the suggestions from rusty and others here I settled on the 17 rem.

Just got it back from getting threaded today

That's what I'm talking about right there. After getting a can for my .223 several years ago I made sure to get my .17 Remington barrel threaded too. I'm not too sure when I last shot mine without the suppressor on it. Sure a good combo.

While most here are probably much more dedicated varmint hunters than I am these days, here are some thoughts.

Both calibes are so dang cool & both have changed the varmint world forever! Love...love the .204 R for so many things; I will always keep one. But...there is something so cool about all these .17's. I.E. 17 HM2, 17 HMR, 17 H-Hornet, 17 Fireball & of course the 17 Remington...you need one of each. The latter is definitely awesome as well as proven winner for your application. If you don't need the distance or the extra foot pounds (.204 R) it will do just fine.


Regarding CZ's, I fell in love with Czech firearms nearly 3 decades ago before they were so well known. (I.E. Brno's/ CZ's) These days, as always, I think the CZ 527's are pretty tough to beat for the money.

To that point, I actually have at least one in every caliber available as well as a few customs & Wildcats in calibers not currently offered. I even have a 527 in 6.5G on order...hoping to see it before spring. So I guess I'm committed...or need to be.

On the topic of CZ Varmint or American (standard) barrels it really comes down to YOUR use & applications. While they are available in both profiles for .204R...they are only available in Varmint for the .17 Rem. (I too think CZ is missing the boat on that.) To me they are definitely lighter & more balanced for my style of shooting & hunting which is rarely at a bench. NOT that there is a thing wrong with that...I just prefer walk-about & want to keep them lighter for my application. (Accuracy is the same for both.) Yes the Varmints stay cooler longer & hence retain accuracy longer before they are heated up. But...they take that much longer to cool off. For my needs with a either a .204 R or .17 Rem I rarely need more than 3-5 rapid shots. If I do, I either will switch rifles or use something else. I.E. 17 RF's or a 17 H-Hornet.

I USED to have several Varmints...both lengths/weights. They are all gone now & every single one of mine is a American standard profile barrel including my .204 R. Even my 527 in .17 Rem is an American...one of the few out there. I.E. custom PacNor barrel. BTW, you could easily rechamber one of their 17 H-Hornets in an American if you really wanted that profile fairly inexpensively.

Not to get too far off topic but right now my favorite is in 17 H-Hornet...tough to beat the efficiency of 3650 ft/s & being able to load nearly 600-700 rnds with a # of powder. But for your needs as stated it is tough to go wrong with either the .204 R or .17 Rem. Some say that the 20's are a tad quieter & of course the .17 Rem has the characteristic & piercing "17-Snap". The .204 R definitely reaches out & keeps terminal velocities further out...but tends to destroy things more...which can be good or bad depending on your perspective. But the .17 Rem is so great at what it's good at. As I said, there is something so cool about 17's. Sorry so long winded...fun stuff!

YES please, I'm VERY curious about the sound difference on this & thinking very seriously about this as they are legal to varmint hunt with here in Utah.

Depending on the can the sound level is about the same as a .22 lr fired out of a rifle or a bit more quiet even. I have stood right beside mine while someone else was shooting it and was quite comfortable.

What I like so much about mine (other than being quiet!) is that when shooting colony varmints they dont start diving for their holes after the first shot. Rather (and comically!) they will stand around and look at you waiting for their turn to intercept the next Vmax. Almost seems like cheating in a way.
 
Thx Rusty...I appreciate your input. With this purpose in mind I have actually gone ahead & bought a few of my CZ's factory threaded (22-LR Kadet pistol, 452's in 22-LR, 17-HM2 & 17-HMR). I also have had a few of my rifles cut & threaded including a .223 & CZ 527 in 19-Badger. Just haven't moved forward with a moderator yet...silly eh? If I finally get off my butt & full or the paperwork...I may have my .204R, 17 Rem & 17 H-Hornet cut down & threaded too. Realizing I need a separate one for the RF's, I would love to run just one for all my small caliber CF's if possible. Thoughts? And probably a third for my pistols & pistol caliber carbines.
