CZ 527 .223 American or Varmint?

Between the CZ American or the Varmint which one would you choose and why? I'm looking for feedback here from people who have had some experience with both models. I have a heavy Savage .22-250 but its getting to be a bit heavy to lug into the brush. I love the accuracy and consistency though. To me, accuracy is very important....Big confidence builder and it doesn't hurt when popping chucks at 400 yds. I am leaning toward the varmint version as this will be my primary prairie dog gun.

This is my first post so please be easy with me. Been lurking for a while now and love the site.

In 223 the american or 204 the varmint.I like the longer barrel in the 204 and its still not very heavy.

I vote for the varmint. I have had one varmint and two Americans and while the Americans are easier to tote, they are so small and light that even in .221 Fireball they move too much from recoil to see your hits if you are shooting off a bench. I like to see my hits.

I think that the varmint model just looks nicer too. It just looks just right to me. Fine gun.

Thanks for the input guys. The Varmint is what I had my eye on anyway.... but I checked out an American the other day and it felt SWEET. I'll make my order this week. Rock Chuck season is approaching quickly... must prepare now.

Any advice on rings?

Leupold makes rings for the 527, depending on the size of the ocular bell on the scope you use it will take either medium rings for Leupold or like scopes or high rings for scopes with larger bells. I think that Warne also makes rings for them or I have used millett rings, they work alright but don't seem as rugged as the others.

I found a great deal on a new American so I grabbed it.It came with CZ rings which are very good quality and keeps the scope about as low as possible with about 1/8" bolt clearance.I really like the light weight especially now with all the snow/having to wear snowshoes.I'm sure you'll be very happy with either.

I just bought a 527 Varmint in 17 Remington a couple weeks ago, have not had a chance to shoot it yet though. I like the CZ Varmint because it is sort of a medium sporter barrel(not really a full blown varminter but thick) as for rings I bought a set of Burris medium rings and they worked fime with the 40MM scope I mounted. They run about $41-42 at Midway.

One thing to remember is CZ makes two different twist rates in their .223's. The American is a 1-12" twist while all the Varmint versions are 1-9" twist. Don't know if that makes a difference to you or not?

Thanks again for all the help. I think I'll go with the Burris medium rings. The twist rate is suppose to be 1-9" which is really what I would want. I would like to go with the carbon fiber stock but the rifle would cost quite a bit more. I'm a wood guy anyway so I'm happy with that.

The .223 varmint weighs more then the .204 ruger its was substantialy more. I had the .223 varmint walnut and I believe it weighed 8lbs exactly and 9 with the scope and warne rings. I think the .204 is listed as weighing 7.3 or 7.5.

I have shot the american a good deal and it probably better for hunting.

They are both very accurate.

The varmint was maybe a little easier to shoot well but for coyote it doesn't matter much. The ease of carry is worth it. I sold the varmint. My buddy shoots the american still. I now got a t-3 and I think I like it a little more then the cz's. The T-3 feels like a toy but it shoots great and carries like a dream.

Varmint. I personally don't think they are too heavy. I do have light rifles with shot barrels I am also quite fond of. That is how I justify owning 2 223s. One is a Remington 700 BDL Varmint, the other is a Tikka T3 witha 18" barrel and a 1 in 8 twist.
