What are they running where you guys are at?? just had a chance to get a 204 for $599 NIB at the local Gander. I was tempted but this close to Christmas and the look on my Wifes face dancing in my head I held off. It seemed fair, I thought about going back after the first of the year and seeing what I could work out. Thanks in advance

That's about average.
Buds has em for about 630.00 (average) with "Free" shipping, but we all know there's no such thing as free.
Whittakers is usually about 20'00 less but they no longer list their prices so you'd have to call. They do have lots of CZ's though.

The auction sites are also a good place to do some comparisons.
Luck

Thanks Pete, I will probably go back after the first of the year to see what we can work out. They have had this rifle for awhile now so I am fairly confident it will last a little while longer. I have heard to many good things about this rifle/cal combo to pass it up I think.

Hope it works out for ya.

IMO,,,CZ's are one of the best rifles made these days.
They have a couple quirks that some folks can't get past, but NEVER dissapoint where accuracy or function are concerned.
I've got a couple that I'll never part with.
Luck

You may already know this but the CZ takes 16mm rings and I had to get high rings to clear the scope(bolt handel)I really like mine though,it is a one hole shooter in .223.Twist is sort of slow, would have liked at least 1:10 better I think.Mine don't seem to be picky about ammo and I like the set trigger.

I just sold a 527 varmint .17 remington. I loved everything about it other than the .17 remington part. awesum trigger, beautiful stock and craftsmanship, very balanced and accurate. I payed 684 after tax and shipping. sold it for 575 with 100 rnds through it. Tryin to by a 527 american 221 fireball next. good luck, you will love it!

Maybe $619 here in E. Washington.

Great rifle ...... bought mine ..... a .223 for $499 in '05.

Best at a walking gun but I like my old 788 Rem better for shooting 'otes off of bags ..... the weight helps there.

what didn't you like about the 17 rem? i've been thinking about picking a .17 up. thanks chris

I kinda wondered the same thing myself, on paper it sounds like a sweet combo, but I really dont have much experience with the 17 Remington though.Originally Posted By: toombOriginally Posted By: Flat Land CoaxerI just sold a 527 varmint .17 remington. I loved my 527 Varmint in .17 Remington. Killed a lot of ground squirrels with it and quite a number of prairie dogs as well. Had it not gotten destroyed (my fault) I would still have it today. I have a Rem 700 in .17 now, but overall liked the CZ better.

Well,,,,,,, I'm about the biggest 17Rem fan there is, and although I love the 221FB, it's not even close to the 17Rem in either killing power on Coyotes, or splat factor for Gophers. There's no possible way I'd sell a 17Rem to buy a 221, but I'd sure as heck add the 221FB to the herd. That's a great little rifle and a very fun caliber for sure.

Only thing better would be to take that 221 and have the magazine shortened, bolt handle modified to accombodate lower rings, and screw a new P-N barrel chambered in 17FB on her.
Kinda like this.

Then you'd have everything from Ground Squirrels,,,,,,,,

to Coyotes (at reasonable distances) covered.

I'm as big of a fan of Remington Rifles as I am the 17Rem caliber, but I gotta say the way Remmy's QC has plumeted the last few years, the CZ's probably the better choice. Especially for the guy that doesn't care to finish the work that the factory started.

I do love my old Remmy's though, so I better throw up a pic of my old 700 Classic in 17Rem too.

I'd hate to have to pick between these two rifles as both are about as close to the perfect walking varminter as I'll probably ever get. The 700's got the classier look and feel, but the little CZ American with CRF's a true work horse.

The CZ's that sold for $575 or so last year jumped like $100 to $675 to $700, more for the Kevlar Varmints. I did pay $633 for a .221 FB to have Pac Nor convert to a .20 Var Targ. If you prefer a wood stock, they're still about the best at those prices; that said my last purchase was a Tikka T3 lite SS in .223. Got it for $599, with $25 shipping and no extra 3% for charge card use. It is deadly accurate out of the box and has a great adjustable trigger.

There is a wholesaler on the east coast that has CZ 527 Varmints,in .223 only, at $499.00.

I bought the CZ Prestige 527's in .22 hornet and .223 before they discontinuesd them several years ago.CZ wrote in their press release:

"These rifles are a product of the factory custom shop and have a limited run.

The Prestige rifles will feature hand fit actions selected for fit finish and function, American styled stock made of "Semi-fancy" grade Turkish walnut, 18 LPI checkering and a smooth satin finish. The Premium rifles will also sport a jeweled bolt in addition to the standard hammer forged barrel and single set trigger."

Here is an example of their fine work.

ok, dont get me wrong guys, i absolutely loved the cz. the only thing i didnt like about the .17 is the maintenance. i was always paranoid about cleaning it after every 12 shots. I had it in the back of my head all the time that I had to let it cool down after every few shots. when i hit the 100 round mark I didnt wana shoot it any more. That was the nicest rifle I have owned and it was my baby so to speak. I didnt wana shorten its barrel life or get any nicks or sratches on the beautiful stock. I know this is all stupid to you guys cuz you all have super nice guns but I had to trade it off for something a lil more rugged and uglier that I didnt care about taking hunting. Would have been nice to keep it but I couldnt afford to keep it and get another rifle.

I was really interested in .17 centerfires when I bought the cz. I kinda stumbled on it by accident and didnt know anything about cz other than it wasnt the typical savage, rem, win, etc. My friend at the local gunshop informed me that he owned a 527 lux 223 and he wouldnt trade it for anything. I reviewed my choices of a rem model seven .17fb, 700 sps varmint and standard sps in .17 fb, or a cooper 54 in rem. or fb wich was waaay out of my price range. After doing a ton of research on the 17fb, i found the 17 rem to be slightly superior so i ordered the 527 varmint completely blind without ever getting my hands on one in person.I was so nervous for the 3 days it took to come in that I was freakin out! I didnt know what to expect of the brand but when it finally showed up i was head over heels for it! In my eyes it was beautiful and a rarety considering it and cooper were the only two manufactures to chamber that round. Im a diehard savage fan but its a tie between savage and cz for my favorites with t/c and rem. not too far behind

bigsky, from what I have read, the .17s just require to be cleaned more often because the bore is so small that there is no where for the powder and copper fouling to go, wich leads to inacuraccey. Failure to maintain the barrel properly leads to shorter barrel life but I wouldnt say shorter than ant swift or 22-250 shooting hot hand loads. As long as its taken care of it will last you just as long as anything else. RePete would know much much more about it and is prolly going to inform me that Im wrong but I think im in the ball park for the most part.........I hope;)

Well,,,,,,,, you are right about "Reading" that the 17Rem is problematic, because gun writers got that in their minds early on, and instead of doing their own home work, they just repeated what each other was saying. Mostly to make deadlines, and get a pay check. Kinda like folks on the internet, if ya know what I mean.
Truth is the 17Rem's no better or worse than any caliber. Naturally, barrel quality play's a big part in ease of cleaning and accuracy, so the rough barrels that Remmy made early on had allot to do with the folk lore too. My buddies CZ in 17Rem will easily go a hundred rounds between cleanings, and my two P-N's would probably go three hundred although I'm a clean freak so I'll never be able to prove that theory.

As far as worrying about scratching the beautifull stock on your varmint model goes,,,,,,, you may be "pleasantly dissapointed" (if that's possible LOL) becasue 99.9% of the Americans have ALLOT nicer wood than the Varmint models. A good problem to have though,, IMO.
Here's the wood on my new 204 Varmint. (Keep in mind that this is one of the older ones with the 26" barrel when CZ was using a little nicer wood than they do these days).

And the stock on my 527 American that started life as a 221FB.

For some reason, the FB and Hornet's always seemed to have the best wood. Since I'm a small cal. guy, I always said it was because the guy in charge of the wood pile in CZ land was too. Just speculation, but probably as accurate as most internet lore. LOL

Reguardless of the quality of wood both the 17Rem and 221's are really a reloaders caliber.
If you don't reload, the 222's a good middle of the road caliber, that you might want to concider.
It's got same (smaller length wise) magazine and bottom metal as the 221 and Hornet so it makes a good platform for a small cal build if you ever wanted to do something like that, but still plenty accurate, and with a few more choices of factory ammo than the FB.
I'm not bashing or debating one caliber over another, just throwing it out there.

Course,, you might not want a 222 either, because I've seen some pretty nice pieces of wood on them too.

I think im going to get the american in 221fb next. A friend of mine loves the round and he claims its very accurate. I do reload and im curious as to what the round might do with some 35 and 36 grain bullets. I have a savahe 11 fcns 223 thats my workhorse now but its prolly gonna get pushed to the side for a new 12fcv 22-250. I might be pursuing a new job opportunity thatll let me fill up the gun cabinet a lil more. I think that ive found coyote hunting to be a gateway to varmint guns and a fascination with reloading and trying new to me calibers. working up loads and finding accuracey is most of the fun for me! Thanks RePete!
