How would you guys go Varmint or American in 17 Hornet Best balance handling? Not that much difference in weight but can't find one to check out think I'm going to order one unseen.Unless they have one at the Davenport gun show tomorrow. I will use it for calling and PDs,Groundhogs. When did they change the bolt handle?
Thank you in advance

I have an American in 204 and a Varmint in 223. The barrel on the varmint is longer so naturally its a little heavier. I like them both so its a toss up for me. Probably go varmint as I prefer heavy barrels. Did you happen to see the two for sale on Accurate Shooter? He has two for sale, NIB $600.

I have had two Americans and two varmint 527's and I shoot off a bench all the time so I prefer the varmint. When It came time for a new barrel for my .221 Fireball American I bought a varmint weight one to replace it. Now I am down to just a .223 still in its American configuration. That's fine with me.

Something to consider. Since your looking at a .17 caliber I’d prob lean toward the American. Why, if CZ uses the same contour on their .224 caliber barrels as they do their .17 caliber the 17 will be stiffer and maybe ounces heavier since it has a much smaller bore going through the same contour barrel. Either way, both will be great guns.

I have both the American and the Varmint in .204 Ruger. I much prefer the American for calling. For Varmint hunting, I like the added stability of the Varmint. Not much help I suppose.

I have both in 17 Hornet, I can see no difference in accuracy whether in the field or off the bench, I still don't know which I prefer.

I much prefer the "Varmint" model in the CZ 527's.

Right now, the American may be the only model you can get because there doesn't seem to be any Varmint 527's in 17 Hornet anywhere. I thought I had another one ordered, earlier this week, but then I got an email from them later in the day saying they were out of stock. Every place I've checked, in store or online, is out of stock for the Varmint model 17 Hornet.

I have several of both models. My 527 varmint in .204 weighs less them my Remington 700 BDL Buckmaster sporter in .243. The varmint model really isn't that heavy. But the American i own in .204 is a joy to carry if you were to be doing a lot of hiking. Both shoot lights out with several bullets so there's no real accuracy advantage going to the heavier model. Using the same bullets and loads out of both rifles i get about 50 fps increase in velocity with the longer barrel on the varmint model. Not enough to matter when hunting coyotes.
