CZ 550 9. 3x62? ??????

Here's a good article on the 9.3x62 in case you haven't already read it.

My son has a CZ 550 in 375 H&H. He loves it and so do I. Recoil, to me, is not as punishing as my .338 Win Mag, and the rifle is extremely accurate.

If you are looking for a real stopper for dangerous game, according to the article the 9.3x62 is it. Apparently the 375 H&H took over the title of the most used rifle in Africa, not because it is better, but due to other factors such as war and politics. According to what I read, Professional Hunters say the 9.3 anchors game better.

As to an all-around big game cartridge, well, apparently the 6.3 is more than enough. Don't let that discourage you, however, if you want to hunt deer-sized animals. My thoughts are what's the point in owning such a rifle if a guy can't use it, or maybe only use it once or twice in a lifetime on an African safari. My thoughts are go with what you like. Have fun with it, do some reviews and maybe load some rounds that will achieve the results you are looking for. Owing and shooting a fine rifle has it's own rewards.

My son took a whitetail deer with his 375 purely for the enjoyment of hunting with it. I have taken deer with a variety of calibers, from 6x45 all the way up through most common cartridges to my 338 Win Mag and 35 Whelen, the latter two again being just for the joy of it. Some may say using those larger cartridges for deer is overkill, and they would be right in the strictest sense in that you don't need such a rifle for deer. But truth is you don't need a 30-06 for one either, so you get my point.

Either way, the CZ 550 platform is a very good one for such a cartridge.

Very close to a 35 Whelen in performance. Suitable for just about anything that walks in most of the world.

Plusses over the whelen

Heavier bullets in factory loads
Cool factor high

Minus

Limited selection of bullets and need of a custom mold for cast bullets, the whelen can shoot bullets meant for the 357 Mag for plinking and small game, lots of inexpensive trigger time.

Here's a starter:

I can tell you from personal experience that Barnes TSX are great bullets. They drop deer and antelope where they stand with my 7mm STW. Lung shots from side-to-side do little damage. Same for TSX in my 338 Win Mag. Improper hits can sometimes cause more damage.

I personally would feel more comfortable using a controlled expansion bullet such as the TSX rather than a conventional bullet that would no doubt expand more, maybe violently. I think the TSX bullet would serve you well for about anything you would likely hunt with that cartridge.

As with most things, you have to start somewhere and experiment. You may not really know until you try.

Another idea to consider is to phone the various bullet makers and discuss what you want and get their input to what might serve you best.

Here's an example of a .338 Win Mag deer, shot with a 210 gr. TSX at about 75 yards. While there is blood all around, you will notice the exit wound. Not bad at all. I have seen far greater damage with a 30-06.

Interesting thread, I too have been kicking around a 550 in 9.3x62 just for the unusual factor and give me rifle for things bigger than deer were I ever to need one, or even if I don't. The only thing that holds me back is I'm a stainless synthetic guy in hunting rifles and CZ doesn't offer it. Ruger is currently offering the No. 1 in this caliber also, which would make a neat rifle too.

I like the Ruger #1 rifles. They are very classy in my opinion, and most all of them have nice wood stocks, though they are not always quite as accurate as a good bolt gun. The Ruger will most likely pound you harder too than the CZ, my thinking anyways.

If you want the rifle just for the pleasure of owning it, then either would be nice. But, if you plan to actually hunt dangerous game, I'm thinking the Ruger could be a bit slow in reloading. Just thinking out loud.

While I have no experience with the CZ, I do have a 9,3x62. My rifle is a Husqvarna 640 built on a commercial FN 98 action. I handload the 270 grain Speer bullet at modest velocity for whitetails.

It just plain works! I use PRVI brass and also the the PRVI factory loads shoot well in my gun. I would think the CZ would be more of the same. If I could pick one cartridge for world wide use the 9,3x62 would be it.

One good option for the 9.3 and smaller game is to cast your own bullets. The 9.3 is known to be cast lead friendly.
Another option is to try reduced loads like using Trail Boss powder.

BobT, that is a very nice buck. Nice going with that and a lot of satisfaction no doubt taking it with the 9.3

Thanks, he was made more special because he was killed on public land with a classic rifle. It was my 50th. year of deer hunting and he was the first buck I killed after my Dad passed away. He was a very old buck his teeth were really worn.

A 286 grain bullet at 2400fps. Extremely similar to a .375 H&H.
