Dad And His Colt Python - Predator Handgun?

My avatar is a photo of my father when he was young married hunter. He turns 82 in a couple of weeks and can't walk very well anymore. My oldest son and I took dad out for a scouting trip today. While he can't do calling stands or spot-n-stock hunting; he can ride around with us while we perform reconnaissance for the fall predator season.

We saw several mule deer, 2 coyotes, 1 fox, quail (by the hundreds), and lots of rabbits (cottontails & jacks). Dad brought his Colt Python along for the ride. Even though dad can't walk more than a few yards from the truck, he got in lots of shooting at those pesky rabbits. If it wasn't for the "graphic" photo rules, I'd post a picture of the big guy with a couple of his victims.

All in all, we had great time. On the ride home, dad was regaling us with stories about the number of coyotes and fox he sent to their maker as a result of the Python - this pistol has been in his collection for many/many years.

It got me to thinking about using a revolver for close-range coyote work. I've shot his Python many times over the years and it is very accurate if I do my part. Anyone using a pistol to take coyotes?

It might be interesting and challenging

Shot one not long ago with a TC 14 inch in 30-30 on a drive by.

Probably the very last one I will shoot with that set up!!!

Tough on my broken but mostly healed wrist...

I regularly use a scoped TC 15" pistol in 243 Win. Recently used a Glock 32. my belt gun, for one that felt like he was in my back pocket. It's a lot of fun.

Got a young dumb one several years ago with my Smith and Wesson K-22. Nailed him middle chest as he was staring at me about 50 yards out. He did not go far.

Yeah man get yourself a comfortable holster and bring it along. Besides, any predator hunter should have a sidearm when calling. You never know if a mtn lion or bear could come. If a dog gets into your effective range pull out that python! Or maybe you have 1 stand where you would use a shotgun its probably also good with a handgun.

My g-20 is going to blow a hole in the next dog that gets within 50 yard.

Sounds like your old man had some fun out there! Sounds like alot of game for you this year. Must of got your share of rain too. Haven't seen so many animals in years.

A .357 with 125 gr. - 140 gr. hollowpoints is perfect coyote medicine. I have a smooth old 6" S&W M19 .357 that I am going to make an effort to take out some this season. I've killed a few with handguns as targets of opportunity. In fact, I missed one Sunday with a 4" Kimber .45 ACP Tactical Pro. I busted it out of some brush as I was walking a tree line and it was on the other side of a row of cedars running at 30 yards when I took a shot... I missed, over the top I think. Here is one I didn't miss a few years back during firearms deer season. The handgun is a S&W M29 .44 Magnum 8 3/8" barrel. I killed this one as it trotted past at 40 yards...
