Danner or Rocky ???

I'm looking for a pair of hunting boots. Right now I'm hunting in rubber boots and they aren't cutting it. My feet always freeze when it gets into late fall/winter. I think part of it is due to the rubber boots not breathing, then my feet sweat and get cold.

I'm looking at these Danner and Rocky boots:

---

Danner Pronghorn CamoHide GTX 8" Waterproof 1000 Gram Insulated Boots Leather and Cordura

---

These are the cheapest pair in the running:
Rocky Sport Utility Max 9" Waterproof 1000 Gram Insulated Boots Leather and Nylon

---

Rocky BearClaw 3D 9" Waterproof 1000 Gram Insulated Boots Leather and Nylon

---

Will 400 grams extra thinsulate make much difference in warmth?
Rocky Arctic BearClaw 3D 10" Waterproof 1400 Gram Insulated Boots Leather and Nylon

---

I'd like opinions/testimonials of these boots. Looking for durability (I'd like to not have to buy another pair for a long time), warmth, and light weight(if possible). They all have great reviews, so I'm having trouble making up my mind.

I have had or have two of the boots mentioned. I wore out a pair of the rocky bear claws. They were plenty warm (800g) and waterproof. I currently have a set of the pronghorns. By far the most comfortable pair of boots I've ever owned. The danners after a couple of years will now allow a bit of moisture in, although only when they get really wet walking through tall wet grass. If I were buying right now, I would definatley by another set of the pronghorns.

+1 to bowhunt32's comments

I've had both, actually still have both. I like the Pronghorns a little better.

For more warmth, try the toe warmer packets. They work great. Not the best if you're in and out of the truck a lot as your feet will sweat, but for longer hikes you are G2G.

I've had my Danner elk hunters for 12 hard years now. I guided 7-8 months a yr in Montana for several yrs, mostly by horseback which most people know is hard on boots.
I've kept them greesed and dried em on a boot dryer when posible.
Just this summer I had to get new soals put on which cost around 80 bucks. Now they are like new. Would'nt trade em for nuthun !

Sorry for the bad spelling.

Of those the Danners are good. The newer Rocky boots not the best. I like 1000 or more for my feet. Usually the toes are short on insulation and of course the bottoms if your standing on frozen stuff. The Prong horns tend to have a softer leather so a little caution to no abuse them. Most guys I know that use the boot in wet conditions regularly get some seepage after a couple years. Not sure if it is from gore-tex deteriorating or seems stretching.
We use the Nikwax system, same as old danner system to keep leather new. People always ask when seeing my boots.

I called my last pair of Rocky boots my tracking boots. The soles fell apart and left a trail of black rubber bits wherever I walked. No more Rocky's for me. MI VHNTR

Ok, I think I've made my mind up...Danner.

Are the sizes pretty standard? I think I might try to try them on at Gander Mountain before I order them, if they have them.

After i brought back my third pair of boots for leaking Danner said they would no longer warranty their boots for me and told me to go buy my boots elsewhere.
I'm not a danner fan.

Rocky boots aren't the best quality and their customer service is famous for being a DISservice instead. Danner boots are a good step up from the Rocky boots, but there are better boots available too. I think this was hashed out last year in a long thread with a lot of good recommendations. I'm curious why so many of you use so much insulation in your boots. I've found that a good wicking liner sock followed by a good merino wool sock and about 400 - 600 grams of insulation works great down into the teens on the thermometer. Maybe that won’t work for stand sitting for hours in sub zero type weather, but for general purpose hunting in weather above single digits I really don’t like the bulk of those 1,000+ gram boots. Plus they sweat my feet and don’t breathe well which actually makes them colder.

I called the closest GM and they don't have the insulated ones in my size. They do have uninsulated. Will they fit the same regardless? I hate to order a pair of boots online and then have to return them because they don't fit right.

My New Balance tennis shoes are 10.5 D. I'm thinking an 11 would probably work with heavy socks. Sometimes boots feel narrow to me though, so I'd like to try the two different widths on.

Go with Danner.
I had a pair of Rocky's that I hadn't worn much and the sole broke into pieces, just fell apart like tracking dried mud across the floor. They wouldn't even return my calls or emails.
That was my LAST pair of Rocky's.

I have had great luck with the Danners over the years. I have had several pair of Rockys and won't own another pair. The Danners run pretty true to size from my experience.

Danner up man

...Take it from a coon hunter! Ive put a many miles on just about every kind of boot made over the years and Danner wins hands down...Chippewa and Red Wing are excellent also...Rocky boots are a cheaply made....

I owned a pair of Rocky Cornstalkers, they leaked, in a heavy dew. Called the company, they said that was two bad! I should buy another pair. Well. I did, at Cabelas, their brand for $50, the only leaks I get is over the boot top when I misjudge the water depth.

I have a pair of Danner Pronghorns, and I won't own any other boot from now on. I was a little hesitant at first due to the cost, but they have been worth it.

I've never owned a pair of Rocky's, but I can sure give the Pronghorns a "2 thumbs-up" recommendation.

I have a pair of Danner pronghorns and a pair of Cabela's outfitter series boots. When its time to buy another pair I'll buy the Outfitter series again because they don't leak and have a lifetime warranty now with the Cabela's name on a product.Plus they can be resoled.Pronghorn soles are glued on you have to throw away a good pair of boots usually when the soles wear out.Good luck if your new pronghorns don't leak.2 pair of mine leaked.Gators don't cover up the whole boot either!Pronghorns are great for long hikes when its dry out!
