Day Time Running Lights

I've got a 2000 Chevy Silverado that has the daytime running lights and the automatic headlights. Since most hunting is best at sun up and sun down, I would like to shut the headlights off. I've been told to push the e-brake down a but to shut them off - which works, but then I have to listen to the chime. I've also been told to push the dome override button a few times - that didn't work.

Do any of you guys know how to shut the lights off? If I have to I will just pull the fuse, but I figure there is a better way.

Thanks -JK

To this day I don't understand the value of having the headlights on during the daytime. If a person can't see a car 100 yds away at 12:00 noon unless he has his headlights on, he does not belong behind the wheel!

I disabled the daytime lights on my Toyota at the fuse box. I just cut the wire. Now they only come on when I hit the switch. Just like in the "good ol' days". When I get time I'm going to put an in-line toggle on the brake lights. Gotta' have stealth mode for night hunting. Where it's legal, of course. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

2000 Chevy Silverado DRLS CAN BE TURNED OFF WITH A SCAN TOOL AT ANY CHEVY DEALER.This could also be charged to warranty, but your 2000 is out of warranty (time wise). Some dealers do this at no charge and some won't. Or you can remove the drl relay .Open the electrical center cover (2).
Using the relays/fuses diagram, locate the DRL relay.
Remove the relay from the underhood electrical center. Hope this helps

hey NASA

That may be a good idea, but what state do you live in? My dad owns an automobile repair garage which does state inspection and also state emisisons testing. Out here in PA, your vehicle would not legally pass the tests. Do i agree with this? Heck no. Does he? Absolutely not! But his job is to make sure that the vehicles that come into his shop are "road worthy" and pass all the tests put forth. For example...If a vehicle comes with foglights, even if they are an aftermarket add-on, they must work or else it does not pass. I know it is a stupid law and it most likely is totally different where you live but to anyone in PA who tries to alter something like that just be aware that you may be in to problems down the line.

I am in no way trying to blame you for anything, NASA, i'm just telling people in my area what could happen. thanks!

hello nasa! if you have the flat fuses, they have clips that you can buy and put on a bad fuse and they have male conectors ( flat) that you can use speaker wire or any duplex wire. put two female conectors and run to toggle switch. i put a inline fuse just to be safe.. you can also put a small running light on or under the front bumper, ground light and run a wire from accesery to toggle switch and out to light. ( switch on light when you turn key on and off when you turn key off) works for me.. good luck grandpa fudge /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I live in NC and they will pass a safty inspection here with out day time running lights. But I have no idea about your state.I would just put the relay in the glove box and plug it back in if when needed.I think 2003 and up can be turned off by owner,so it must be leagle in some states.

Important
This service bulletin is not applicable to vehicles sold in Canada.

A new feature has been introduced for the above listed vehicles to temporarily disable the Daytime Running Lights (DRL). Customers have been informed of this new feature via a supplement to the Owner's Manual. Vehicles first sold in Canada, and some early production vehicles, will not have the DRL disable feature.

To temporarily turn off the Automatic Headlamp System and the Daytime Running Lamps feature use the following procedure:

Turn the ignition to RUN.
Press the DOME OVERRIDE button four times within six seconds. A chime will sound informing you that the system is off. The system will remain disabled until the ignition is cycled off and on again.
To return to the automatic mode, push the DOME OVERRIDE button four times within six seconds (chime will sound), or turn the ignition off and on again.

Pwking,
Long time chevy salesman here. EASY TO CHANGE .....Just push the "dome override " button on your dash board 4 times within 5 seconds. that will turn off your daytime running lights. It resets itself to default when the key is turned off. If you want them back on you do the same thing. It will also shut your headlights off if it is dark enough for them to be on. Read the owners manual if you have one. Daytime running lights will only turn on when the truck is in gear. hope this helps

I hate the DRLs on vehicles. If it is a bright sunny day they act as camouflage and make the car much harder to see. On top of that it is much harder to tell how far away the car is with the lights on, especially on the straight flat roads in lots of the west.

Nasa; your second sentence is right on the money,
unfortunately with some of these drivers nowdays you need ALL the help you can get to let them know that YOU (and other people) are also on the road. I have said before that half of the drivers in this town shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel of a car or should take thier bad driving habits back to where ever they came from (newcomers/tourists).

360guy, I do that all the time while hunting, expecially night hunting. Works well for me, I like having the option to leave them on or turn them off at the push of a button.

I like them, Nasa I agree with you about not belonging on the road, I think about 50% dont and 4 of them already ran into me!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
My 2004 and my new 2005 both can shut them off at the headlight switch. I like that.
I live in the often dim Northwest and I really do like them.
Carl

Look underneath your dash below your steering column there should be a black box that is about 3-4" wide just uplug the box and it will take care of the DRL. The entire little box will come off when you unplug it. Had the same problem with my Chevy and this took care of the problem without losing anything else. Hope that solves your problem.
Heath
