Decent price for a gun?

My friends dad is selling a Remington 700 BDL in 300 Win Mag. It has some engraving on it and it comes with a sightron (not sure what model) 3-9 scope. He said he will give it to me for $500

Whats the 300 Win Mag like? I know its recoil is A LOT more than my -06 and it already abuses me enough but I have always wanted to create myself a long range gun and the 300 would make a decent long range caliber wouldnt it? Just need to build around it with a better stock and all.

The gun sells for around $600 new and the scope depending on model is at least $150+ the bases depending on what they are could be $20+

This is just me talking but if a 30-06 abuses you Id say no go on the 300. Unless you want to brake it, and put a nice stock on it then by the time you do all that you coukd have bought a brand new gun

Wood stock with black nosecap? Factory engraved? That's about what I paid for mine used in like new condition. They don't engrave them like that anymore sothat makes it a little special. I thought a new wood stocked BDL was closer to $750(not engraved). That is what I recall seeing them for at Academy in Ft. Smith anyway. Mine shoots quite well. I say get it and learn to love the recoil.

Matt N. i havent seen the gun but im guessing it is that same one he just called me and said he had a deal for me.

YA im still not sure foxy... it would be a neat gun but i hate my -06 and i dont want to get it and be like my dads .338 win mag... he bought it, sighted it in, muzzle blast blew the new window of his pickup, he put it in the safe.

hasnt shot it in years

the 300 wm REM 700 is what the army markmanship unit uses for 1000 yard competiton. there is a good reason. it is very accurate. and very good components are available. have a vais installed FIRST. it will kick less than a .243. both of mine are very very accurate. you cam load it down too; to 30-06 or 308 velocities.

I've never heard of a "vais" but if it is some type of recoil reducer get it. They can make a huge difference with some rifles. Also remember that you can always download to lower velocity levels.
Sounds like he is making you a good offer on a good rifle.

Vais muzzle brakes are legendary for how well they recuce recoil. Invented by master gunsmith George Vais they are now sold by Ron Bartlett. Vais sold Bartlett his patent rights before moving back to his native Greece.

They shoot good, but buy, beg,or steal a lead sled getting it sighted in.I don't think you want to spend hours shooting at paper with it.Get some great scope mounts and scope.Stuff tends to break or come loose.Good luck.

im not sure... honestly i dont need a gun that big itd be fun to turn into a 1000 yard gun some day but the recoil is what scares me... and i honestly am not a fan of noisy muzzle brakes im sure they help greatly but i dont need to be any more deaf.

and when i asked dad about it he told me if i can shoot 5 shots in a row through his .338 win mag [beeep] think about it. HAHA that aint happening

The price is good deal, buy it. You will get used to the recoil in a short time, New price up in Fargo is $749 for gun with no scope.

If the rifle is in good condition then that is a great deal.

I know I am going to get flamed for this, but I don't care.

What is wrong with you guys being afraid of the recoil of a 300 Win. Mag. in a 700 remington??

The 30-06 is world renowned as the finest hunting cartridge there is. And the 300 Winnie is just a little more of the best thing. I can't not believe how people cry over the recoil of a 30-06. If you are mamed or something then so be it. But a grown man agonizing over the recol of a 30-06?? UNBELIEVABLE. Tom.

Hes 17. Hardly a grown man. No offense noob. Ill be the first to say that anyone who dosent think a 300 winmag has some pep to it
1) hasnt shot much or
2) dosent know much.

Well. Im 20. Been shooting a 30/06 for awhile. Never been bothered by the recoil. But a 300wm is right at the edge of what im wiling to tolerate. But- after 20-25 shots with the 30-06 I need a break. Much less with a 300.

Weight has alot to do with it.

Btw 17 isnt a grown man, hes still in high school but this is a discussion for another day.

Best of luck in youre decision noobie.

Alright nvm this thread is closed I'm not going to have another one full of people calling me a puss for not being able to handle the -06... I don't know why maybe I have bad form but unless I free hand it I cant handle it. Enough said good night all

You display a lot of wisdom Noobie (in spite of any "puss" hazing).

Recoil, and to a lesser extent noise, is possibly the primary reason why people have difficulty developing (or retaining) good shooting skills. If you are afraid of, or even anticipating the recoil (or blast) of a firearm, YOU WILL NOT SHOOT IT ACCURATELY.

I enjoy shooting "the big boys" long range, and it's not unusual for me to shoot a hundred rounds of 7mm mag or .338 in a day. Though I'm very recoil insensitive (deadened nerves?), I'll GUARANTEE I could never do that without recoil reduction devices, in that case a brake AND a recoil pad AND a kick pad.

For any "heroes" who think recoil flinch is a result of being a "puss", here's a challenge for you.

Go to the range with the unbraked rifle of your choice (even a .223) and a friend. Shoot 50 rounds prone without a kickpad or brake. Then, while you are NOT looking, have your friend load a round for you to shoot, or NOT load a round (so you don't know). Once you are "on target" again, have your friend balance a dime on the end of the barrel.

I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts that when you squeeze (jerk) the trigger the dime will fall off every time, even when there was no round loaded.

That my friends, means you "flinched" because of your "fear" of recoil.

I would rather teach marksmanship to someone who openly admits fear of recoil than to someone who pretends.

This may be a good deal on a gun you may not shoot a whole lot now, but years down the road you may be glad you took advantage of the opportunity. There are a lot of guns I wish I had bought, or I wish I had kept. If you pass on this deal 5 years from now you may find yourself shopping for a 300 win mag and looking at having to spend a lot more for less of a rifle. The 300 win mag does recoil more than the 30-06. With more shooting experience I bet you can handle it. I have a friend that is not a big guy; 5'4" and 145 pounds. He also loves to target shoot his .300 win mags at long distances for extended periods. If it is something you want to do then the end result will be more satisfactory if you consider it a challenge, work toward it, master it, and achieve your goal. Instant gratification will not be handed to you very often in this endeavor; not in my experience anyway.
