Decision Time: 6.5 Grendel AR-15 or .308 AR-10?

Since the last post about the 6.8 SPC vs. 450B went so well, I decided to ask PM members to help me decide on my long range rig. Both cartridges are good to shoot out to 1000 yards...so do I get an AR-15 in 6.5 Grendel or AR-10 in .308? I would carry it hunting, but realize it will be for long range and obviously be a little heavier. Those of you with either or both, what helped you decide? Share your thoughts on weight, cost, ammo prices, parts choices, energy downrange, etc.

Thanks again! You guys are the best

If it were me and I was willing to deal with the cost and weight of the AR 10 platform, I'd probably go with a 10 in .260. It would get you the case capacity of a .308, along with the benefits of using the bullets (and a couple more) that make the Grendel attractive.

I have a 15 in .264 lbc and just love it. It is, however, a compromise and a pretty big compromise at that. Virtually every good load is compressed - some are REALLY compressed. 140+ gr. bullets are outside the envelope.

My $.02 and worth every penny.

As a postscript the .264/6.5 grendel are accurate as all get out, easy to load for, and a blast to shoot. I've never shot mine beyond 200 but would not be all that uncomfortable taking it out to 600 with a lot of practice. Beyond that, I'm not sure.

I have to agree with KlrDrvr... .260 in an AR 10 platform. I have several ar 10's and by far the real hammer at longish ranges (500 plus yards) is the .260. If ammo is a concern and you don't reload, an AR 10 in .308 is a pretty good option too. I don't have a grendel (yet) so I can't speak to it's down range performance but from what I've been told, it has some great points but nothing that the .308 can't meet. The .260 on the other hand blows away both calibers in every area past about 550-600 yards. Just my two cents and I think you will be happy with whatever choice you make. Let us know which direction you go.

I agree with both of the above and bought a DPMS 6.5 creedmoor. I've had it about a year and half now and to me it's a big improvement over my .308 bolt gun.

I have a DPMS LR 308 that I bought anbout two years ago. I do pack it around hunting occasionally and it weighs in at just under 16 pounds. When I bought the gun I contemplated getting it in 260 and wish that I had. If you reload and are thinking 308, go 260.

What will you be hunting? I have both and much prefer shooting .264. If your just using it for dogs & such I'd go with the smaller round. Much easier to haul around if calling animals a .264 a much faster recovery time if your needing a follow up or going after another target.
If you'll be chasing larger animals, well then the larger round wins.
