Decoy Dogs???

Mike, I am only making an assumption on the post and pics where you have Bubba on two live wounded coyotes, or did I make a wrong assumption? By far the most dangerous event in a decoy dogs life. Your opinion is that is OK, mine is to avoid this at all costs when possible and for sure not prolong it by taking pics while it is going on. Your right in stating it is a very dangerous hunting method especially for the dogs and I try to eliminate anything that may make that more dangerous.

As for the advice the Pro's as you say, ADC men like myself,if we saw an advantage to using a dog in that timeframe don't you think we would?

SGS, I hope if you error with that cur you do it on the side of caution. This is why I posted. If ya want PM me.

Mike you sound lke a stand up guy, I respect your views, may not agree with them, but that's what makes the world go round. Bubba is a good lookin Cur and i wish you all the best with him.

Randy,

I appreciate your concern. Believe me, if a wounded coyote was tearing into my dog I wouldn't be taking pictures.

But, Bubba can hold his own and I'm not overly concerned that a wounded coyote laying on the ground will do too much damage to him. He's a hunting dog and I expect a few nicks. Besides, I don't think it would be possible for me to keep him back unless I shocked him, and I'm not going to shock him for something he's trained to do.

Just curious, do you use dogs at all? If you do, is it only during the denning season or all year. I would assume you use traps mostly. Like I said earlier, the ADC folks here in Montana said a decoy dog in the winter would only cost me coyotes. Maybe if you're in this game as a profession, anything that adds more complexity might not be so good. But, Bubba also adds a new twist to an old game. I've killed truckloads of coyotes over the years before getting a dog, having a dog out there with me has increased the enjoyment of coyote calling significantly, and he's much more photogenic than I. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mike the dogs in the pics are my dogs, Bart and Millhouse, I have used a dog way before I ever new it was called a decoy dog. Before I had this job. It just made sense to use one to help at certain times of the year.

Now I only use my dogs regularly May thru Sept. and even in that timeframe they still cost me coyotes from time to time. I have many callers using dogs and greyhounders everywhere, which is what I believe is why from time to time I see coyotes unwilling to engage my dogs.Even coyotes with pups in the immediate area.

From time to time in the off dog season if I have found what I believe to be coyotes that will work the dogs I do take them.

They are companions that come with me on trap and snare checks.

I understand your companionship with Bubba and you are aware of the plus's and minus's of having a dog on the stand in fur season. I think some only think of it as a plus and are not aware on the minus's.

First complaint I ever worked a Sheltie named Sophie followed me out from the ranch house thru the snow. I sat down to begin to call and there she was so, I kept her right beside me and sure enough an old male coyote showed up, the coyote locked in on Sophie ,and I shot it at about 100 yards and Sophie took off for the house wide open, I guess she was gun shy!

Good hunting Mike! Bubba watch your backside!!

Randy,

We have hijacked this thread, which I normally don't do. Your dog pictures aren't showing up. All I see are two blue question marks. Do me a favor and go over to the hound forums and post another picture or two. There are a lot of guys in there who appreciate good looking dogs.

Thanks.
