Decoy Idea?

I am fairly new to predator hunting and have been thinking about getting a decoy. I have been thinking about Skinning and tanning a Red Squirrel I have frozen in my freezer. Then Stuffing it with pillow stuffing. Then putting something simular to a decoy heart only cheaper in it. If anyone knows where I can get one $20 or less let me know. Attaching the "decoy heart" To an old portable radio antena that I can adjust the height with and then spray painting it brown. But my Question is: I use a rabbit or coon distress call. Will this make a difference if I use a squirrel decoy while calling with a rabbit call?

A guy I work with used a toy he found at a local toy store. The toy came with a fake tail on it. He cut the tail off and put a rabbit skin over it. When he turns it on it rolls around it a small area. He says it works.

The cheap alternative to the decoy heart is the kids toy "crazy ball". Off-set motor that spins around inside the ball. You might be sorry for not paying a few extra bucks, tho. Decoy heart has an on/off switch which is handier than unscrewing the ball to turn off.
The squirrel skin is going overboard. You can get by just fine with a stuffed toy. The realism isn't that important if you've got good action...as has been proven by the predator enticer decoy. It doesn't look like much but it does so much spinning and flopping around you can't really tell what it is anyway. The antenna thing sounds like a good idea for your purpose.
Good luck.

I went to wal mart paid $3.00 for a yard of fur like cloth cut out two oval shapes sewed them together added a tail added a Decoy hart, made a stand out of pvc pipe I had layin around, cost me less than $20.00, plus I still have a bunch of clothe left for extras, thinking sbout makeing a herd of robo bunnies maybe the coyote will think he struck the mother load

CJPredator,
Nope, the Decoy Heart won't fit inside a red squirrel. It's about the size of a baseball.

Like some of the other posters said, use a stuffed toy that resembles an animal and that will work.

You'll probably end up cutting out the bottom of the toy so it can slip over the top of the Decoy Heart, simular to a hand puppet.

My fox pro is all the decoy i need. i covered it with camo tape. I'll be darned if a coyote didn't come in hard and pick it up and run about 10 steps with it. the sun of a buck is probly still running cause i missed him twice. ya know it's real hard to shoot at a 15.00 dollar coyote with a 500.00 doller fox pro in his mouth. see ya FRED

Here's a post about a decoy I made. It drifts around in the wind and looks really good

I don't think the predators realize it's a rabbit in distress and they're seeing a squirrel. They hear prey in distress and the see moving fur...thats all they need. If dogs were that smart they'd probably notice that my rabbit they're comming in after has wings

...then again, maybe they have..I haven't called anything (non-human) into it yet..but I've only used it twice.

shoot/em dead Fred,
There's no way I'd let a coyote get away with my decoy, but that's easy to say not having been there. I'm sure that you were really pissed!

Did you ever recover the decoy?

Get one of those bunny fur hats like they sell in cabela's. Then you won't have to worry about moving your head to much, you can keep a good lookout, and be your own decoy!! Ha Ha

Bow hunter 57, I really like your signature, classic!!!

I was walking around in Agway today and noticed a sign. It said "Rabbits for 10 bucks" The first thing that came in mind was, should i buy one and use it as a decoy? My father said, "what will you do with it after the season?" I thought about it and said "don't rabbit taste good?" I didnt buy it......yet?

I have been using a toy skunk that moves for years I believe it costed me 50 cents at a yard sale
I have seen my brother use a paper bag and fishing line
get out and have some fun

I mounted a stuffed rabbit on a 12v windshield wiper motor with 250 yards remote controller. The CD generated sounds are also radio tranferred.
Not bad for home-made on the Dark Continent.
Here is a picture of it.

Lochi...

Thats a pretty sweet set-up ya have there... How does the rabbit work? Does it spin in circles atop the box? Or does it have some other range of motion??

I have been thinking of ways to build on for myself and have a few ideas, but nothing as elegant as your own... Totally wireless operation has got to be cream of the crop!! Way to go Lochi!!

With Easter almost upon us, you can go down to the local stores the day after Easter and pick up any of the leftover stuffed bunnies cheap!! Color doesn't matter Coyotes and fox are color-blind anyway! It's the movement that attracts them.

I have made the call you are describing. I ordered the heart from Heart Decoy as the ones from the toy store , to me made to much noise. I attached a door spring to the bottom of the heart with a small screw. Slid the other spring end over an old arrow with field point to help stick in ground. I dressed it with a wally world animal. It works great as far as function I haven't had a charging in a grab it response on it yet, but I didn't get it built until late in the winter and breeding season was in full swing. For what it's worth. later pup
