Decoy or coyote dogging dogs

We've got so many wolves around anymore that I really have to be careful where I hunt my dog. I'm useing dogs less and less for this reason. Coyotes are bad enough but a wolf is totally different. And you can't legally protect your dog from wolves.

The wirehairs have been my favorite since the very early 80's. They just love to hunt!!! Not just coyotes but all kinds of game, both fur and feather! If I would get another wirehair I would want a shock collar to have a little more control of the dog.
 
I like mountain curs. They make good companion and stock dogs and have enough grit to protect themselves if a coyote gets ahold of them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

What bloodlines are your curs from? The crippled coyote, or runnin to get a few bites in right after the shot, right before death has made many vets alot of money.

For you new guys, not something to mess with. A crippled coyote will latch on to your dog and it's not going to be pretty!

My cur has that habit off running to the coyote right after it is shot, great for bringing in any additional coyotes but make sure it's dead.
 
Roede- yes he came out of montana, the guy that I got him from used to be an ADC trapper in Wyoming and that is how he got into using the dogs, all of his personal dogs as well as my pup still do some denning as well, and are probably more aggressive than most, which is not what everyone wants, but hes never had a dog killed or even seriously hurt, they are also on the larger side, Hunter is 9 mos and close to 50 lbs, his dad is probably 75 lbs, while they are a little aggresive on yotes they are extremely gentle around people as well as small children and most other dogs

Bean is a JRT. I do not call him a decoy dog....but he sure like to go. I can control him with the electric collor....I have found that Jacks hunt more for themselves than they do for you.

Kelly, ole Bean looks like a terror, used to know some guys in iowa that ran them with hounds on coons, those JRT would get em out of the wood piles ,junk piles ,any pile.

We have been tinkering with an idea of crossing a cur with a Jag. We'll see.

JS how is your cur around other dogs? Mine likes to maintain and show dominance. In our developement we live in alot of bird dogs etc. roam around. Everybody has a Lab or something. So I have to watch him pretty close, with people he is fine a little antimidating, at first they always wonder if he is part pit bull, big broad head, he too is 65 plus pounds.

Better to have a little more agression to deal with than to timid. Every decoy dog has to fit the style of the owner. Everyone has different ideas on how they want them to work. Personal preference.

Randy - Bean likes coons. He caught three on the ground last year while I was walking in to setup....he likes to go under old houses, but will bite onto what ever is under there. He has come out with acouple of skunks. His head all green...he was sick and I was sick for him...

A smallish cur [beeep] and a dog jag would be interesting.
There are some folks here that run Jags with their hog dogs. They say they have grit.

Randy- Hunter is very similar to yours around other dogs for being only 9 mos he does not back down or give in to any dog in town, at 4 mos he had a lab mix twice his size so bullied around the dog wouldnt come near him anymore. Around people he is as friendly as any lab ive ever had, but also somewhat intimidating, due to his high energy level and size
 
wackmaster, i have some catahoulas, use mine to work cattle,think they will work yotes also. I live in southeastern co. Curs are hard to find out here. If i can do you any good let me know.
 
I have looked at the catahoulas also but was not finding as much info on them. do you have any pups? Have your dogs done any hunting?
 
I just started taking my dogs coyote hunting with me and think they are doing good. I was drilling a well in the cedars and one treed a fox,didnt know a fox could climb trees. Yes catahoulas will hunt, you will have to break them off what you dont want. They are pretty smart and gritty dogs. I have one female blue lep,left,but will be having more pups. I'm sorry I don't know of any mountain cur breeders in Colorado. I do have a friend in Ohio who sells a few cur pups if you are interested.

There is alot of good information on moutain curs on the squirrel dog central web-site.
