I'm lookin for a cheap decoy and not sure what to use? I have a turkey decoy whos head bobbles on a spring but I'm not sure if it will work since there are none in the area!

I think it wiil work ok it's the movement that gets there attention.Just about any thing home made works and tons of store bought stuff to and something in every ones price price range.I use a decoy to take the focus off me and to help lure the target into my kill zone.Decoys help but you do not have to use them to be successful.

How about a feather ?
I called in this bobcat a while ago. It came in from below a small cliff and I am sure it was focused on my feather. When it came over the top it was face to face with me. The wind was blowing just enough to move it. Can't beat the simplicity and the price. Put it on an aligator clip with a thread.
Good luck

I remember a posting on one of the forums where a Snicker or Milky Way wrapper on a string was used and a bobcat was called and killed. I think cats, especially, are susceptible to anything with a slight movement that's different. Seems like I once heard something about, "curiosity killed the cat". I'm not sure coyotes are that easy to fool though, someone else would have to speak to that.

I'm also interested in what people have came up with as far as cheap homemade decoys. I've used pheasant feathers tied to fishing line hung from a branch in the past with good results on fox, but this is totally dependent on at least a small breeze.

I'd like to find/build a decoy that sits on the ground and jerks around, something good for coyotes. I used to have a rigor rabbit, but after trying to adjust it so it would move more along with getting rid of that loud humming noise I ended up blasting it to pieces. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Are there any manufacturers making any these days that have good motion AND are quiet?

And how about some pics/thoughts on some good homemade ones....

Some feathers tied with a thread to a branch, if you don't have any feathers you can get them from a Tandy Leather store, they are pretty cheap, and almost any wind will animate them.

kenpo, I like the Jack in the box from Foxpro. I made my own topper for it out of 3 tanned coon tails in a pinwheel formation so I get plenty of movement.I have also done well with the Out Foxed Woodpecker. The only glitches with it are you have to sometimes carry something to mount it to (like in an open field) I usually use an old arrow, and it is not very back pack friendly ie; the wing will break off easily in the pack. Both are good and I love the remote control for the JIB. the motor on the woodpecker is a little loud but it dosent seem to bother the predators.

Being the absolutely cheapest and laziest hunter in Texas, I went with the easiest decoy I could come up with:
Tip end from 2 piece fishing rod (about 3 ft long)
turkey feathers (one turkey will give enough for years)
short length of fishing line

Tie 1 to 4 turkey feathers to top ferrule of fishing pole with slip knots so you can easily remove them to go to next stand, stick butt of pole in ground at a distance appropriate for calling type (i.e close to stand if mouth calling, close to caller if electronic calling). Sit back and watch all kinds of wildlife check out decoy. I have even had deer and/or cattle come up to it and smell it. Extremely light weight, works in any weather, low cost, natural colors, easily replaceable, requires no trees or brush, etc, etc.

I put a small piece of velcro on the fishing rod so it can stick to my shooting sticks or backpack.

The only down side I have found is this year the grass, weeds and other ground cover has grown to ridiculous heights from the extra foot of rain we have had in west Texas. I had to dig around in the shop to find the other piece of the fishing rod so my feathers would be tall enough to be seen over the flora. Thankfully, it was a 6 1/2 ft rod. Works out to clear everything except the sunflowers after removing shaft from grip. Well, there is one other problem with it - I have lost one of these to a red-tail hawk who took the whole darn thing. He dropped it after about 100 yds, but I never found it.

I said cheap....lol

I think he was responding to my question on a good manufactured decoy that's quiet and has good movement.

Didn't mean to hijack your thread rawjr.....I like cheap too though, so I'm liking this marabou feather idea myself. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
