Decoye Dog Barking on stand

Ok so Lucy is still young and full of spit and vinegar and well she is a pup. So the few times I have had her on stand she does great she will go out a ways (I still keep her on a lead) but she goes out and makes a great second set of eyes but out of the few sets we have done twice we have had coyotes communicating back and she started barking at them once the yote came in to look at who was barking. The other I never did see the yote.

So the questions are. Her barking on stand a bad thing or not? And if it is what’s the best way to stop it? A snap on the lead a zap from the collar. Thanks all rp

My guess is it's ok. What's the problem? If being used as a Decoy, then the coyotes see her and know what it is. If she becomes a large intimidating dog, she might scare off a 30 lb coyote.

There are debates on using decoy dogs during certain times of the year. Heck there are arguments on the effectiveness of decoy dogs, period, for the recreational caller.

Hopefully one of the more knowledgeable guys will step in here.

I asked this same question a few weeks ago and the replies I got were that it doesn't much matter. Seems to be more of a personal preference thing.

Barking is good in my opinion. Dixie does it on stand, when she sees a coyote and it really works well for me. I don't know how old Lucy is, but if you have her tone trained to come running back to you on an ecoller, cut her loose and let her go after them. You've got her back covered with a rifle, if needed.

My buddy had a white german shepard that he used to use as a hunting partner. He is a govt trapper. Anyway this little dog would see a coyote, either on stand or in the truck, and it would start whining and/or barking at it. The coyotes would stop and stare at it, and it would allow my buddy to get shots on the coyotes. This really worked to his advantage while driving to a stand.

It worked for him, maybe or maybe not for you. Like others have said "personal preference". Good luck. I know Tug likes to bark at my GSP when he is running around. Haven't gotten him on enough coyotes yet.

Here is a video I found on the web. This is Bob Mc's video, I think this is just the softest tolling dog I have seen. Not any real barking, but some whimpering and such. I love watching this.

Never had one that barked much on stand.
I would think that time of year would have a lot to do with it.

Right now you got pups and adults responding to the call. Pups by themselves may or may not respond well.

Come March or April, barking at coyotes might be an asset.

My thoughts and worth what it cost ya.

Stay after them

thanks guys for the help just making sure I am doing it right it right with her she is to smart for her own good sometimes but that comes with cattle dogs lol rp

I wouldn't worry about it. Halle (a trapper2 pup) takes after them barking like it is the end of the world, chases some and heads back to me. We called yesterday morning and she took off barking before I saw anything and was having fits with a coyote across the fence. They both were barking up a storm and a second one joined in the cussing. I don't know that the second coyote would have showed up if the first one hadn't been carrying on so much to Halle's barking. I don't think it's a bad thing.
