There are a number of 99's around... the brass gutted ones are the better of the model, but they are tough to find. I have one with the cast metal guts and I think I paid about 400 for it. They aren't that uncommon. Look on Gunbroker or Guns America... both will have what you are looking for.

You want a deer/black bear caliber in an AR15 platform? Me too! I am going with the 6.8 SPC. I want an AR15 platform rifle that my kids can shoot deer with (read adj stock, low recoil) and I can hunt black bears over bait. The 6.8 SPC fits the bill perfectly. As stated earlier, bears are no harder to kill than deer. Good shot placement and a quality bullet design are what is important. The 6.8 SPC has plenty of power to take deer sized game out to 300 yards. Check out 68forums.com

Go with any of the Marlins in 444 or 45-70, or 450 marlin. My choice is the 444 Marlin, this thing will kill anything you shoot at up to 200 yards. I use 265 grain Hornady Inter-bond hand loads in mine, it also has the wow factor to shoot. If you want something other than Marlin, I would go with a 99 anyday before a BLR, JMHO....

270 is too small for black bear? Must be a whole lot bigger black bears in WA than the ones we have in MT.

Now dont get me wrong, i like big guns sometimes too, but just because i like my 338 win for Moose doesnt mean 308 wont work.

Did not read the four pages of replys but my caliber of choice would definately a 300Win Mag, loaded with a Nosler 180gr bilistic tip...done! I love that cal, cant beat it!

Rifleman, I'm not familiar with those cartridges in a rifle but ammo cost is the second biggest factor for me. The first is having plenty of size in caliber. After that I want to be able to afford 1-500 rounds a week at the range. I probably wont need to shoot as often as for some reason I do better with open sights. (I bought a decent scope, not a grand, but not a cheapo either.)

Big sky, I've been educated that the .270 should be plenty for the bears I am after. Lots of guys around here use 7mm-08 and 7mm mags so I'm not opposed to them either. Maybe even a 6.8 SPC at this point.

Burris, I do think that anything that ends with mag is usually a pretty sweet package. I haven't priced 7 mags and 300 mags but if they're anything like the other mags, I won't want to shoot them as often.

If anyone knows why the brass 99's are better I'd appreciate the knowledge.

So far I think I've got more decisions to make than when I started. Luckily I'm not going after anything bigger than yotes til after next summer so I got time.

Because the basic functioning in a 99 is much like a revolver, with the rounds loaded around an axle type system... the cast metal tends to wear much faster, and gets sloppy causing mis-feeds and sticking... The brass is a much harder metal and does not have this problem. They made less with brass because it cost more at the time I think.

I don't shoot mine much, and its never been an issue, but that was the general difference behind the brass/ cast aluminum. I have one unfired in .300 Savage that is brass, and the action is much more crisp, but its also unfired.
