Fence hunts-high or low-they are still in a fence.
If it is low, then they are not "in a fence". There are barb-wire, hog wire, and chain link fences everywhere, and deer go through, under, around and over them at will.

I hunted a low fence operation in Mexico and the only diff from around here is the management of the herd. It takes know-how, time and mucho denero to create a batch of critters like that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Ill never see deer of that caliber in the woods around here, Thats for Sure!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Must not be any cattle in that part of the world or they just let them graze where ever they may rome. Can't go any where in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas and just see wide open unfenced prairie. Even most farm ground has fence around it.Not many game animals are confined by 5 strand barb wire, come to think of it I cant name one game animal that is.
I hunt lots of areas with barbed wire fences too and agree that game hop over them like they aren’t there.
However I know a lot of the canned fence hunts in Texas and other places “advertise” high and low fences and I’m confident those low ones are not your traditional cattle fence.
Let’s compare apples to apples. If it were free range-fair chase: the topic of fences wouldn’t be mentioned.
I’m not trying to stir the pot; I just feel fenced hunts give hunters a bad rep.

When they say "low fence" in Texas, that is exactly what they mean. There is no open range (free grazing) in Texas. "Low fence" basically means no fence when it comes to deer.
On a deer lease, a low fence is simply a line of demarcation. But it doesn't influence them at all. However, an 8' woven mesh fence is intended for containment. Even that's not 100% effective, either. Along a stretch of US 30 in SE Idaho it's used to keep deer off the highway. It didn't work at least 8 times last Monday.
The reason they mention a fence is that there ARE high fence operations that put on hunts as well as low. Since there are very strong opinions on both sides of the fence...er, uh..issue, it's an advertising thing to say 'low fence'. Low fence in Texas is equal to free range for deer. As many have found out, even high fence can be no barrier to some deer!
Oh and the 'canned hunts' you mention have been outlawed in Texas for years now. If you know of some, do us all a favor and report them!
Whew, I am glad we got that worked out. I was worried for a second since nearly every piece of privately owned ranch and public land here in Wyoming has a fence on it somewhere. Except for maybe in the high country and I have seen them there too. For a second there I thought that maybe every animal I have ever killed didnt count. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
