deer in snare

caught a deer in a snare this morning by the neck, makes me sick. I had the snare set in some greenbriar and honeysuckle, best I can figure it was feeding and got caught. Does this happen often? can it be prevented? Thanks

it can be prevented by using a jump stick... do some reading up on snaring and you'll find info on the use of jump sticks...

ksboy, you're talking about a stick over the top of the snare right? I didn't use one because I figured a deer would have just walked through it not have its head down feeding, my bad.

Deer and predators use the same trails....if you snare long enough you`ll catch a deer, it stinks but it happens. All I can say is don`t let it go to waste if at all possible. Jump sticks? did some quick web searching and had no luck yet. Ksboy, if you would give a description it would be appreciated.

just some kind of stick or log, really anything that will force the deer to jump over the snare. low enough to keep the deer from going under and into the snare. maybe 14-18" off the ground.

if you use a breakaway device(S-hook) on your lock, the deer would have pulled out and been fine,

deerstops only work for a foot caught deer, a breakaway will work no matter where the deer is caught and you'll still hold the yotes and foxes.

yes it happens but it is preventable.

Falfan, your say your from Ohio, if you took a trappers ed course like your supposed to you would know about jump sticks and other ways to prevent deer from getting in snares. you need to better go reread your trappers ed book. and you should also get you a copy of Hal Sullivans book on snaring since it was written in Ohio by a Ohio trapper. what part of ohio are you in?

Jump sticks must be placed very low or deer will duck under them. There is a fine line between what a coyote will go over and what a deer will go under.
I've seen 220lb break away j-hooks that did not break. They are not the cure-all.
Sometimes I think there is no way to gaurantee you will not catch a deer. Our deer population is so high that you are sure to have a dozen deer pass on any trail before a canine. Study what you can and use all the protection you can and you should greatly reduce the odds.

Jump sticks don't work according to some good snaremen, me included. Use a bad, break away device. I figure it is no different than hitting one with your car. You didn't mean to do it, you probably couldn't stop it from happening. Don't let it bother you, there are more deer out there than you can shake a stick at. Deer set off more traps, knock down more loops than all other animals combined, sometimes.

I've caught 6 coyotes within 1/2 mile of each other. This seems really high to me. One large male and one small male the other 4 were med/small females. Should make up for the deer I caught.

sorry to hear about the deer,

Coyotes are newly esablished in the last 5 years to my area of say 30 mile radius not sure about the mountain region of the state but suspect they are newly introduced there too. I wonder if the plan of the state for introducing them wasn't to quench the deer related car accident problems around the state If the coyotes get the deer under control good enough they could plausibly then take the guns away...

An ohio book was mentioned above, are there any good east coast or even appalachian based books on either trapping/snarring or calling ?

Sorry about the jack
