define what upper and lower refers to

When you take an AR-15/10 apart, it splits in half. The upper consists of the barrel, upper receiver, bolt carrier group and charging handle. The lower consists of the stock, lower receiver assy that holds the trigger group and grip.

To further define them, the lower is the part with the serial number and is the "firearm" as far as the laws are concerned.

the one with the barrel is the "upper"...it's basically considered an accessory and you can get them in a LOT of different calibers.

The one with the trigger is the "lower"...its the "firearm" as nmeleon said.

Take a look at the Upper posted by cbass it is an upper, if that Upper had a charging handle and bolt/carrier group it would be referred to as a "complete upper". Be carful when your buying, know what your looking for.

yes yes, good observation Rabon. Some of the $300-$350 uppers look tempting, but on farther inspection, you may find that you need to buy a BCG (bolt/carrier group) as well as a charge handle in order to be "complete"

YES

K another question. Do you have to change anythin on the lowers when switcing from a. 223 upper to a. 204 or. 308 uppers??

To go one step further, here is the "firearm" as said earlier. This is what you have to stand around and wait for an hour to get a background check completed.

That's one reason I keep an AZ CCW even though it's not required. I still have to fill out the form, but there's no NICS check to wait for.

Coming to the Hunt/Convention this year Jim?

I've also been looking at this and am brand new to ARs.... so I can buy a upper in a different caliber and slap it on my R15 without changing anything other than the upper?

Yes, as long as it's a caliber that's compatible with the AR 15 lower, such as .223, .204, 6x45, and several others.
When you go up to the .308, .243, and several other larger calibers you need to move up to an AR 10 lower.
Maybe somebody can post a list of calibers.

Leon, I wish I could. After that little welding job that sawbones did on me from L3 to T13, I'm still limited on my traveling.

Someday when you have a few minutes, send me a PM. I would love to hear about your "triangle" adventures.
