deja-vu , all over again?

James, I think many guys understand what you are saying. All questions aren't redundant or the information simply isn't there in the first place and asking questions on such a topic is part of the researching phase. However...

Personally... lazy irks the heII out of me and I see it as the same "dummying down syndrome" that seems to be invasive in America right now. This is exactly why Common Core is heading to a new standard teaching method in public education. You don't have to have the right answer, that might be too much to ask for, just show a little work and still receive credit for the question. Teachers don't use red ink to grade with because red seems so harsh. Can't call a spade a spade, everybody is always right and never wrong (shudder). The first time kids face a little criticism they cry "bully" and bring a weapon to school because they don't understand how to deal with it. Employers now ask on job applications how a new hire would prefer to be disciplined if that need would come up. We will quit keeping score in ball games and every game will be a tie. The U.S. Military has "time out cards" now that can be used to escape that mean old Drill Sargent when he raises his voice. If it is too difficult to research a little on your own and somebody snubs you then a little crying brings on a rally to boost your sensitive self esteem and blast the offending snubber.

We are quickly becoming a nation of enablers. Too many want to be spoon fed the answer rather than spend a little effort to find it on their own - work ethic. Questions like, "What is the contact number for Remington?" Seriously? Sitting in front of a computer and posting something like that instead of finding it on their own is the type of posting personality I am speaking of. I view pointing someone to the Search Engine as exposing them to pages of archive information of past experience and opinion on a particular topic that could give them a wealth of data and information in the future. Maybe with some encouragement and support they would throw down the crutches and wipe the milk off their lip, hitch up their britches and go to work ironing the problem out and getting on with their program.

Signed,
The Curmudgeon...

Yep, +1 for me too.

Except the 'Time out cards'. That's of internet lore. I know for certain that the Air Force, at least, doesn't use them. But...that's not the point, here.

GC... Yep, the questions can and sometimes do get kinda dumb. It is the manner in which one "points" them to the archives that I am refering to.

Such as, Question: "Hey, What is the number to Remington?" Simply posting " Hey, you can find that as well as a wealth of other information in the archives of the board by using the search function".

In reality typing that was more work than typing a 10 digit phone number (if you happened to know it)..

The search engine is what it is.. As long as you have high speed internet hookup it is a way to find out information. If your connection is slow, don't even bother. Some of you might think about that next time.

What I am talking about is the endless griping, and ripping of a person that goes on and the attempt to belittle a person because someone thinks they should have searched first.

And GC, most WILL bring something to the table if given time. I know that for a fact. I am one that doesn't just come out displaying all I know and I am slow to move into a group and make friends..Some of us need a little bit more time. I actually tend to be the bystander and look at the assinine behaviour of those around me..

Noone here asked a single soul to spoon feed anyone. Nor did I ask anyone to enable laziness. Like I said.. If the question seems stupid or repetative to you, ignore it and scroll on by. I do that a lot... Just have some manners and act accordingly ( which you do a lot more than you want to admit). It will put you, as well as this site, in alot better light.

While I am talking about manners, As you guys may have noticed, I have just returned from a three year absence from the board. When I was asked to return I did quite a bit of looking around. What I saw for the most part was a great group of guys.. But there has been a certain element that has crept in that find it to be some kind of idiotic game to push the TOS just as far as they can. Smart comments, rude comments, on purpose spelling (or misspelling) to bypass the language filters and pure assinine behaviour as well as some old bitties sitting and complaining about everything that they read on here.

Guys, If you don't like it here, or you have come to the point that you have sipped the "kool aide" of some other sites (been to 'em, member at most, seen what they have to say, 99% bull at most) to the point that it has warped your perspective. Save us some work, go out in a peaceful, civilized manner. Not in a blaze of glory. Blazes tend to burn and singe all involved..

The above words in bold are my own personal feelings and do not reflect the rules or TOS of this board... Have a good day... James L.

Quote:It is because of guys like you that most of the real knowledgeable folks have left this forum for better places.

Where would those better places be?

I have visted a few other places, and most have no traffic at at all.

I can't think of a single knowledgable person that has left these forums because of repeated questions. most of the ones that have left have done so simply because life changes and we move with it. Some have changed boards due to sipping the kool-aide and think they have to show thier manhood to the comrads by acting out, thereby getting banned. And some have simply passed on to a better after life.

The last is a time that the so-called torch is to be passed on and for others to pick it up and share the knowledge.

On the other hand I know a few that simply will not share that knowledge with a single person. One that comes to mind said
"Let them figure it out themselves. I won't tell them a thing to help them."

Quite a few of the boards are pretty much dead and some have down right closed up... With all that know how, I wonder why? As far as a better place? There isn't one that caters to all groups from beginner to old pro. How you handle these happenings on an individual basis is up to you...

James, I can only assume that you are talking about me and that's fine if you feel that way about me. But I have never said "Hey (insert disrespectful name here), use the search feature!". I have ALWAYS answered the question and then reminded the poster that we infact have a search feature. The unpleasantness has always come from a third or fourth party who gets their panties in a ruffle and starts a dust up.

At this point I see no reason to even have a search feature, apparently few use it, if you point out it exists your labeled a dick. Just get rid of it and then we can have newbies answering the questions of newbies, which is the way they apparently want it.

In the past, "I used the search feature and couldn't find what I was looking for" could fly, it really was a crap system. But that is horse hooey now. You might have to re-phrase your question a couple times, but you WILL find what you're looking for if you're not too lazy.

As far as knowledgeable people leaving for greener pastures, I don't know about that. But there definitely has been a decline on the postings from the old salts around here.

Chupa

Well chupa.. You know what they say about assuming right? It's the mother of all screw ups...

I do have to ask, why do you think I mmeant you? Did my post strike a nerve for some reason.
I was for the most part speaking in general terms. I did address one particular person but it was not you. I attention has now been drawn to you. At times I have noticed that you can be the shining example of a very knowledgable member willing to give out information. Then you pass out the sarcasm. Why?

I'm one that believes in self reliance of any individual,,,maybe it was just the way I was raised and the various teachers (family or formal) that made demands of me...We didn't have ready access to knowledge and a trip to the school or public library was the norm if the information sought was not in the old World Book Encyclopedia or Dictionary on the home shelves...I became familiar with the Dewey Decimal System at a fairly young age searching for relevant information, using the old index card files in those little bitty drawers...

Maybe it's for that reason that I have a limited amount of patience with some aspect of this technology driven society, but I usually only start asking questions when I can't find the answers on my own, or the time fuse for the needed information is really short..

Like James, there are many times that I have to step away from the keyboard or keep on scrolling to other posts/subjects due to repetitive questions unless there are no positive responses from others and an answer is obviously needed..

I'll pass on an old idiom that my grandmother drilled into me long ago..."Be careful of the words you use, keep them soft and sweet...You never know from day to day, which ones you will have to eat."

James,
I hear you and respect your opinion. You may be more right than I am. I am aware that one of my many failings is that I am a perfectionist and extremely detail oriented. With that said by no means do I think I am always right. You have more patience and a different approach than I might take in certain situations. I contend in this example that by spoon feeding the number to Remington CS you are in fact enabling. Who knows that number off hand? Nobody, so why are you taking the time to look it up and post it as opposed to the guy asking that question while having all the same capabilities to do that on his own? Think, "teaching a man to fish rather than give him a fish." Tough love and all that. I don't see it as a bad thing done correctly. If I responded to that poster I would probably type something like "Google is your friend" and let him do his own work. Maybe next time he thinks about that before asking "What is FoxPro's number?". Respectfully giving a different point of view.

Edit: I will add that the flat screen takes the personality out of the written word much of the time when posting on a forum such as this. If in person I think the expression and tone of the comment often would seem much different than when read from the screen at home. Guys joke and rib each other and the sarcasm, wit and humor are obvious. The other guy shoots back a snarky reply and everybody is grinning when it is done. On the forums the attitudes and egos react quicker than the thought process far too often.

I honestly don't know where to begin. Maybe because I have been elected the poster boy for the "Hey D-bag! Use the search feature brigade", which has NEVER happened by the way.

I don't know what this is supposed to mean. Threat of the Ban Hammer?

Because I'm a MAN, speaking MAN talk, to other MEN! Or atleast that's what I thought. Could I use the smiley's more to show that my remarks are in jest more? Sure I could, so I'm in part to blame. Could a few Nancy's around here use a Mydol Big Gulp? You [beeep] right!

BTW, the last part was more for comedic value than to single any one person out. Any resemblance to any person, fictitious or real, live or dead, was unintentional and purely coincidental. Disclaimers on jokes are so lame.

ETA: That last part was ALSO a joke. Where does it end?

Chupa

LMAO.. No. I find it kinda funny as well as a little paranoid of you to even ask that lol.

What does the bold part of the quote mean? You honestly lost me or I simply don't understand what you mean.

Ya see, I can understand that. Among friends sarcasm and joking around are a natural sort of interaction between a group of guys. Sort of a "mine is ...." well you get my meaning. I wouldn't think of asking a vote to bann you from this site unless you bumped your head and just went overboard.

Chupa, you as well as GC, pahntr, and a whole host of others have so much to offer. May be the time to be the "old salts" that has been refered to and let it be known to all them young'uns.

As Gc said, there is a lot of leave way in the interpretation of the written word over standing face to face and joking around. That at times needs to be brought forward in all our thinking and let it show.. Remember there are kids (sometimes looking over daddy's shoulder) as well as women here. Have a nice evening...

btw: you saying I need a mydol?????
