Another Trump Action Illustrated One Of The Best Things About Trump Derangement Syndrome: the
kneejerk opposition to anything Trump does makes it incredibly easy for him to trick Democrats into taking the most wildly unpopular side of any issue.
Recently, he’s rope-a-doped the Dems into attacking ICE agents for deporting illegal alien rapists, protesting a crackdown on crime that’s given Washington over a week with no homicides, and even badmouthing removing artificial dyes from kids’ cereals and encouraging physical fitness (we expect to see J.B. Pritzker and Jerry Nadler launch the “Physical Fatness Challenge.”) Liz Peek at Fox News
has noticed this as well.
But can even Trump bamboozle these chumps into
taking a stand in favor of burning the American flag? We can imagine this starting with Don Jr. saying, “I’ll bet you a new putter that you can’t actually fool them into endorsing flag burning,” and Trump declaring, “You’re on!”
So Trump issued an executive order banning the burning of the American flag, with violators facing up to a year in jail. It’s one of his rare orders that sparked
protests from conservatives and Libertarians, who may hate flag-burning but don’t like the government infringing on something that’s been ruled as protected speech by the Supreme Court.
However, his critics are missing some key points. The EO clearly states that the law applies only to flag-burning that’s intended to incite violence (which the SCOTUS did not classify as free speech) or that occurs in the context of other illegal actions, and when it’s “within the bounds permitted by law” and “consistent with the First Amendment.” In practice, that creates so much wiggle room that it’s unlikely anyone will be prosecuted.
So chill out, conservatives. Trump isn’t trashing the First Amendment. He’s just ensuring that between now and the 2026 election (the USA’s patriotic 250th anniversary), Democrats will make themselves proudly synonymous with illegal aliens, violent criminals and desecrating the American flag.
And no, we’re not worried about warning them they’re walking into a trap because it won’t make the slightest bit of difference.
