Determining Max range for buckshot on yotes?

Hey guys I know him....lol. I told him to get on here for all kinds of info related to Coyote hunting, guns, ammo etc. He is a new member and new to forums. I'll point out where to look at the post dates...lol.

That's ok guys.....enjoy yer laugh.....I got broad shoulders...hahaha. I'm just a new member....not payin attention to the post dates. Still interested in good buckshot recipes!

Welcome aboard, budsavage, sometimes those 'dated' posts are sure worth revisiting. Sometimes those that laugh the hardest are the ones that are most laughed at, eh woodguru?

look in the top of the firearms page there is and EXTENSIVE post on the top about shotguns and paterns ETC

I use an Rem 11-87 Tactical with an undertaker choke
I think super full turkey
I can shoot BB or T shot very tight out to 60 yards

Thanks guys! I got my 243 zeroed in great....now tryin to get my buckshot to pattern. I only had #3 buck cause that's all they had in my town...and dang few of them...so the patterning session was short. And...all i have now is just a front bead on my barrel, plus, it's a new gun for me that I bought primarily for yote huntin. I'm a pheasant hunter...so not used to "aiming"...lol. Researching some open front & rear site set-ups. I do have a full choke and super-full turkey choke.....

I dont know if they make em for your gun
But I use Williams Fire sights
They are VERY VERY bright
I use em with my slug choke and can hit pop cans at 100 yard with it. I love the fire sight, quick target accusition, works well in heavy timber where it is dark or at night. minimal light required to see the sights!

I will check those out...thanks crowpopper! I know i looked at some tru-glo sights in at my gun shop...looked at them in a semi-dark room and was'nt too impressed with the visibility. Took a tour of 2200 acre farm today with the owner...got permission to hunt. Wow....it looks promising.....gravel lanes throughout...highly accessible. And he says there's plenty of yotes out there and to please kill'm.....!!

Good Pattern at 50 yards with my yote shotgun. Stoger with Hornady Superformance 00 buck. Had a good pattern using Hornady 04 buck also at 50 yards. I use a Carlson Dead Coyote Choke. I have a hunting buddy who killed a coyote at 62 ranged yards with his set up.

Here in Ohio we are hunting the yotes with beagles, If we take a shot that is a little to far it really dosent make a difference because the dogs are going to kept the yotee circling until we get in front of him again. Its not uncommon for shots to be taken at 65 or 70 yards with #4 buck. Yesterday we killed one running at 65 yards from a good shot. I dident skin it but could only see 2 pellets in the critter. One broke the back leg and one went in just behind the shoulder. Often times when a shot is taken that is on the limits of the guns range the yotee will take one to a lung and will only make it a few hundred yards before keeling over. So if you take a long shot and it dont flop over treat it like you would any big game animal give it some time and then go search for it.

Without dogs this is not nearly as simple. Shotgunned coyotes very often don't leave a lot of blood trail. Little low velocity holes leave little leaks and thick fur soaks that up. Soft feet don't cut earth like a hard hooved deer does and if there isn't snow on the ground and in thick cover it is gonna become a complicated recovery. Been there - done that - I try to avoid it if at all possible.

I'm so bad with a shotgun that I don't take shots outside 30yds. At that range #4 SHOT would probably work, but I would never do that because...why would I with so many other good choices out there, but I'm off topic now. My point is this, I have patterned my shotgun out to 45 yards and it will throw an absolutely evil pattern out to that range with my load/loads and choke combination. But the limiting factor in my equation isn't my hardware, it's lack of talent, hence the 30 yard limit.

CG and Chup I agree with what your saying the point I was really trying to make is if someone does shoot at one and it dont drop right there don't assume you dident kill it alot of times one of those #4s is all it takes.
